I wholeheartedly agree with Dave on the 50' OB boxcars...

There were thousands of NSC built Canadian Covered hoppers for CN, CPR, PGE, BCR... in multiple liveries that would years worth of sales....

Pressure Unloading cylindrical hoppers as well; CP, PGE. BCR....



... and correct sized doors for double door boxcars, the majority of cars had differeing size doors, ie: 8 & 7 foot.... heck; how baout differing sized doors for all boxcars....

Canadian 8 hatch reefers would be nice as only GHQ has done a cast shell... once again, CPR, CNR, GT, PGE, BC Rail....

Actually, Wabash National have the market cornered on modern trailers. JB Hunt (Several schemes), Schneider and Swift all use them.

Joe,
A new airslide would be perfect! Proper ride height and body mounted couplers are a must. There are tons of schemes this could be done in. Brachs Candy would be a colorful one to appeal to some of the masses. As for me, I'd like em in Conrail (of course, and I can come up with about 7 different paint variations), PC, Chessie (Sorry Lee), and the GATX 'paired Airslides', which are two short airslides drawbarred together.

Not to horn in on Joe's thread, but just wanted to mention that of the 40-some suggestions made thus far, BOTH of our next two projects were mentioned. We'll let Joe know which two just to avoid any tears...  A bit early for us to officially announce though.

Take the look of the Athearn/McHenry coupler and make it about 50% smaller (the size of the Z coupler). Make a plastic, not Delrin box that fits the existing 1015 pocket to begin clearing up those gaping spaces.

I do a lot of detail work, instead of using the 1015 I use a 905 but have to do a lot of work to fill pilot space. It would be great if there was an alternative for us rivet-counters, a smaller more realistic replacement for the 1015 with a plastic box instead of Delrin.

This has me worried. That Bluford is coming out with two new body-styles could be bad for me personally. Their 86'ers and hoppers have dented Mr Bank account something fierce, I can only imagine what they might be, but hopefully not the Canadian slab sides or cement tubes. Or MIL bulkhead flats.

Just to be clear, if I am the Dave of whom you speak (need a program to keep track, I know), I was pushing for a 40' outside braced boxcar.

We could also use some rivet side 40' and 50' plug door boxcars from the 1960s-70s, as produced in HO by Accurail and now Atlas (former Branchline cars).

Personally I would hope for Bluford, FVM, or Trainworx.  Needing the multiple variations of door sizes/cofigurations and the need for 12 numbers of many varieties makes smaller companies my own preference.  Saller companies usually means smaller runs, more numbers, quicker reruns, hopefully modular tooling for a variety of door configurations.  Mr. Wallet will be unhappy, in a good kind of way.

I would prefer not to buy MT from multiple vendors (because I dislike getting shut out when a dealer gets shorted despite preorders) and needing to buy the full monty at once, because who knows when a second run may appear...

That would be a nice model to see.  But in all likelihood, it would have to come from another manufacturer that doesn't already make a 40'/50' Boxcar PD model.  Normally you won't see models of prototypes from different builders of the same car style from the same era.  There are exceptions - FVM's modern PS and ACF boxcars, IMRC's various 40' boxcars come to mind.  But usually it won't happen because foobie schemes can be decorated on the original models and sell well.

Joe... Are you going to pose this same question to the Z-scale community (Z Central Station)? A lot of folks are tired of see 40' and 50' boxcars every month with ROOFWALKS.    Those same folks would greatly appreciate seeing some of the N-scale body-styles made available in Z. If MTL had put out tank-cars, PS2 hoppers, and such... we wouldn't have to get ripped off with poor quality and over priced rolling-stock from a certain other supplier. >

Unusual tank cars....I'm not much of a modern modeler but oddball cars it what stands out in my memory when railfanning. Those are the cars that I look for to put in my modern trains for N-trak and such. I really don't look to MTL for cars that I am going to mass quantities of, although I would buy if they were offered.

I gotta add one more.  Common car in the South used by ACL, SAL, SOU and others and seen over the U.S.  Don't know the offical name but commonly called "Watermelon Car". I know these date more from the 30s, 40s but some were still around int the 60s.
