EXR 5200 Gunderson Box Car - X roof match found (PICS)

I figured I'd start a new thread since the previous one is nearly two months old.

I found an N scale X roof for the ExactRail Gunderson boxcar.  The Athearn SEICO 50' boxcar has a removable X roof that is a perfect fit.  As it turns out, Chris Clune designed both models, and the component arrangement is identical (separate roof, floor/body one piece, separate underframe).

Athearn is out of the undecorated unassembled model.  But these cars are easy to find in the shops and online.  If you buy one with an aluminum roof, it can be swapped in on the ExactRail model as is.

Too bad that parts aren't available from the initial Milwaukee Road SEICO's that Athearn screwed up.  I remember that they asked retailers to send them back for replacement.  They probably got tossed in a chipper.

Thanks for pointing that out Bryan. Now the ER cars I have can be made whole.

People who purchased the first (faulty) run of MILW SEICO's could just send a copy of the sales invoice and Athearn sent a replacement. I still have mine (the error being the omission of the letter R in "Resourceful"), so this is relevant information! Thanks.

I got a donor Peninsula Terminal SEICO car in the mail today, complete with a pre-painted aluminum X-roof.  The SEICO roof popped off with less effort than the Gunderson roof.  The SEICO roof fits snugly on the Gunderson body and the dimensions perfectly match the ExactRail car - a benefit of the two models having been designed similarly by the same person.

I swapped in FVM wheelsets already.  Now I just need to know if the real Gunderson cars had a cushioned underframe before body-mounting MTLs and discarding the McHenry knuckles.

Thanks for posting this, Bryan - I converted my BN car tonight (took all of 3 minutes, easiest modelling project I've ever done!) and will convert my BNSF car once I've repainted another donor roof.

Yep, it's definitely a quick conversion.

Based on Jason's MNS photos in the February thread, the car has a standard underframe.  I'll be body-mounting MTL 1015 couplers this weekend so one project can be moved closer to completion.

Is there any use for the Exactrail roof? Are there any 50' boxcar models that could be improved with it? It's porbably too much to hope for that some SEICO's had that kind of roof, but I have no idea.

It's a Stanray diagonal roof and there are plenty of 1960s/1970s prototypes that utilized them.  Fewer prototypes had a non-overhanging roof probably, but the part is worth hanging on to.
