I can't imagine that you would be able to get a nice light fade coat anywhere close to this with a rattle can:



With that said, the new weathering book has a chapter on how to use the drawbacks of rattle cans to your advantage.

Now, how far away should one be from the object being painted?

6-8 inches ordinarily.  Don't try to get complete coverage in one effort.  Spray a couple of passes, come back a few minutes later and repeat.

You can also decant spray cans into jars so you can use your airbrush. Here's an article from the Tamiya site, no reason you couldn't do the same with cheap paint too:
