It's official:

http://www.micro-trains.com/cs-ObservationCar.php

Pullman Plan 3959.

Ice or mechanical A/C?  Ice would be nice.

Yeah, that was in the new N scale Railroading I looked thru last night. They will work there way "down" to coaches fairly soon I suppose.

Great... The tooling looks pretty good on all of these, but they're pretty much the same cars that Lima and Rivarossi has done for 40 years (the RPO notwithstanding).

What about 77' single window coaches?  There's a pile of folks standing on the platform at Hillen waiting to go to Pen Mar Park!

Most trains wouldn't even have an observation car, just the fancy stuff, right?

I think Erie only had 3 of them total.

Mostly a first-class car with bedrooms and lounges.  Definitely wouldn't be on an all-coach train.

I will need a few though - two for New Haven and a bunch to convert into Conrail OCS cars.

The only car in the Rivarossi and Lima models that remotely resembles any of the MTL releases is the Rivarossi 12-1, which is based on plan 2410 IIRC (MTL is plan 3410 IIRC). The Lima coach and baggage/mail car are PRR designs, and the observation is a fantasy based on the P70 coach.

Most of these cars are of little interest to me (so far I've sprung for the MTL 12-1) and the observation might be useful for kitbashing a business car (I already have such a project based on the RR observation) - but I'd say for a bunch of people the MTL cars are a hit!

That said one would think some sort of coach would be on the short list. It appears that MTL is concentrating on Pullman designs in the short term, so I'm guessing any coach will be a Pullman design.

The single window coaches will be the bomb for me; the observation 3-2 will be useful for a very limited number of my lines but may be good bashing fodder for a few business cars.... keep em coming MTL !
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

Apparently the same design Walthers did in HO:

http://www.walthers.com/exec/search?manu=932&keywords=3-2

If they copied the Walthers car (here's hoping), then that means ice-cooled A/C and easier kitbashing projects in converting the other three bodystyles.

Could make a fun freelance conversion to a private owned car , or a supervisor track inspection car for a freelance railroad .
