I was surfing around this morning, and stopped by Gregg Mahlkov's Picasa gallery...  What a great collection.

I wonder how long this will stay active.  It's a shame that most of them lack captions.

Two from two weeks ago when I got to hang out with some new blood in the area, my friend Ben (who's been here a while, actually), and a gentleman who's another member in the CRHS and lives in Westminster.

A meatball on the NEC. I love shooting on the NEC, it feels so dangerous, having this stuff FLYING at you at 100mph. It's really "get the shot then get back" for stuff like this. The guys, neither of whom grew up around here, really aren't used to railroading like this.

Then, I FINALLY got a chance to shoot something in Ellicott City. Here a GP38-2 led train is just about to approach the station. Yes, I know the lighting is less than Railpictures.net standard, but I actually really like the fact that it illustrates "winter".

+1.

And it's not just the terrific early photos he posted, but the in-depth "insider" insight he had into railroading. A wealth of information.

It might be worth the effort to sift through all of his posts and create a "best of" thread. A fitting tribute as well as a valuable resource.

Gregg's Niagara Junction shots are gold. Something about the small electric freight haulers that has universal appeal.

Mark,

Not only did you bag the WM covered hopper, but how long do you think it's been since the SCL/L&N "Family Lines System" open hopper in the background at right was last painted?  Figuring when the Seaboard System paint scheme replaced the "Family Lines" schemes, it has to be at least in or before 1983.  I was in middle school then!

Yeah, true. I wanted to get a clear shot of it but that would have taken some serious maneuvering. We just cruising along and the WM car grabbed my eye so we pulled of US 301 and I snapped a few shots before we got back on the road.

WM Jan 14, 2011

What a small world, Mark!  I remembered that I made a trek to the west approach of CSX's bridge over the Susquehanna River a few years ago, and I caught a WM hopper, which I snapped quickly to show photographic evidence of what I found to Lee.  So, I dug through my digital pics tonight and found that I captured the very same hopper that you snapped in Florida.  Yup, if you look close, you'll see what I believe is the same side of CSX 226692 in both photos.  Look at the graffiti and rust marks.  My picture was taken almost exactly three years ago on January 19, 2008 at 10:52 a.m. in Havre de Grace, Maryland.  Good to see it still survives.
