What was your project/kitbash/build/purchase/advancement/etc.. of 2010 ?

For N scale, I was pleased with the way this SD40-2 snoot came out. It took a fair effort to make a number of scratchbuilt parts (handrails, anticlimbers, ditch lights, grabirons, cut levers), plus those itty-bitty numberboard digits had to be applied individually   ;D

(BTW, it looks a lot grimier in-person, the sunlight tends to wash that out in photos.)

I have been a long time admirer of the Southern but,never owned a Southern locomotive...I finally took the plunge and bought 2 Southern locomotives a GP38 and this SD35 and in that light my big smile of 2010 was switching cars with this locomotive.

I finally got some track down and introduced the kids to the delights of watching a train (if only an engine light or passenger special) run back and forth. My daughter wants N scale bunnies and such so my work is cut out for me in 2011!

Great stuff, everyone! That BNSF SD40-2 looks great!

Although it's a fussy little engine that has given me fits at times, my favorite this year is my SP SW1500 kitbash inspired by Daniel Leavitt's....



(Edit) Crud.....I just looked and I actually built this in November of '09. It's been over a year already and I haven't built anything else?!

I'm going to keep it in as this year's accomplishment as it took me almost all of 2010 to get the thing running decent.

This year was pretty much 'eh.'

Several periods of unemployment, originally starting when the engineering firm for whom I was working closed the Morehead office, and then drifting from crap job to crap job since (I made more when I was in high school working for an electrician!) hasn't been fun.  Add to that the theft of most of my trains, and it hasn't been a good year.

The only good news is that I am now in a house that I don't rent (owned by the family) and I am again employed as a draftsman.


I've a head full of doubt, but the road is full of promise (to paraphrase the son of a friend).

Actually, I've been busy keeping the mfg's in business by buying stuff that I bet I don't need.

I've been toying with the thought of building something to run on... a sectional switching layout that will actually be the end of the branchline on the layout I might build if I ever get a house. Loosely based on Goderich, Ontario, where CN and CP both served the town, it's grain elevators and it's large salt mine. Toying with the idea, that is... that body mount job really took the stuffing out of me.

My plans for a home have been, again, put on hold because there is always something more pressing to concern myself with (work). Going from a small to medium sized business is a chore and requires long hours of us all. When the time comes for the house, and I actually get something built, I'd love to have some of you Railwire kings over to laugh at my efforts.

What did you use for the walls of that station?

Evergreen sheet tile.  IIRC .040 thick. Interior bracing also Evergreen sheet and some 1/4 inch square stock.

Unfortunately, what made me smile the most regarding N scale was something I didn't do. 

After Intermountain's 'rendition' of the as-delivered CGW F units, I swore I'd not buy another decorated unit from them.  But then they announced M&St.L F7's.  Growing up in a city named for the M&St.L and crawling around their (then CNW) tracks my whole youth, I have a real weak spot for that RR, in fact, if they had made it to '68 before getting merged, it'd be the railroad I model.  But I stuck to my guns, even though I knew that they would be a short release and if I didn't pre-order, I'd probably miss out.  Add the fact that Atlas announced GP7s as well, I knew I could be missing an opportunity to put together a nice little M&St.L roster.

Well, anyone who follows RW close enough, and isn't ignoring me, knows what happened.

Bittersweet for sure, but I'd been pissed had I bought them.
