Nice shots and great music! Your foley artist, though, needs some practice. ;)

This is hall of fame stuff, great overview. The newness
of the yard blends with the entire theme through the new
manifests (i.e. Pig). Awesome.

You referring to the bent pine tree in the opening shot? :o  Yeah, I caught that...  Just didn't feel like re-shooting.

No, foley work is sound effects.

Ah, I see...  Not familiar with the lingo.  I pulled some generic train sounds down off of iTunes.  What I need to do is take some of my own video and then use the sound.  I suppose the timing could have been better on some scenes.  Oh, well!

The one place which was noticeable was the road crossing.  After the train passed you could hear another one coming.  I was expecting another train in the other direction.  Not a complaint as I think this is an excellent video.

Sadly, you'll have a hard time shooting video of a 7 unit GP40/GP9/U25/C425 lashup, with half of the engines sounding like it's all they can  do to have all the parts moving in the same direction...  How I miss those early years of Conrail!

Bob, yeah, I noticed that...  That was the only recording I had with the requisite 2 longs, a short, and a long for the crossing, but the engine noise passes with the caboose.  Still, in my mind, adding some sound, even if not quite synched, helps the little trains somehow seem bigger.

There are a number of websites that offer free sound effects clips. I just Googled for an hour or so one evening and gathered a bunch of these freebies into a little library, then I cut, paste and mix as needed.

Here's a quickie I tossed together a while back:

Here's the one and only video i've taken with my Nikon.  Your more than welcome to grab the sound and use it.

Thanks for the info, guys!

I think I've had my fun with Conrail for now and will run some PRR this weekend.  Sometimes it just has to be Pennsy!

Don't take my observation as criticism. I'm just super sensitive to matters of film. Some people don't give two hoots and a holler about it. But I'm the guy that screams foul when Kevin Costner gets off a Baltimore MTA subway train at the DC Metrorail's Georgetown stop (there isn't such a stop, for frustratingly political reasons, for those who don't know) in No Way Out. I find it hard to suspend my belief systems.

Foley artistry is the creation and mixing of sounds; creating the proper effects, timing, directional properties etc. One of the things that got me was the pacing of the wheel set sounds was so off compared to the visual and there's distinct phasing of diesel sounds as the locomotives pass and continue behind you.

Try these sites for some audio:
www.freesound.org
www.soundboard.com

And here's the result of a quick search I did for "SD45 audio file" which has some good diesel sounds.
www.yardoffice.com/RR/WCSD45/PhotosAudio/...
and "train passing audio file".
http://www.tradebit.com/filedetail.php/838236-train-passing-1-sound-effect-wav

And to toy with them all, there's always Audacity, a free audio mixing software - http://audacity.sourceforge.net/. There's a bit of a learning curve, but it's fun to play with, making loops, playing with timing, etc. Just don't try to slip in a slide whistle ala Benny Hill.

Gee Dave,

I think you set the bar pretty high on what can be achieved through video direction and editing in N scale.

Thumbs up in my book. (and the music is so "top 40's" of the period to boot)

Joe.
