It's funny, for being an internet professional, I still prefer my magazines to be paper, for the exact reason Lee mentions.

I LOVE what MRH is doing, but I just don't read it because whenever I'm in front of a computer, I have more important things to do (like read The Railwire).

That's why it needs a "mobile" version so we can read it on our iPhones, Blackberrys or Droids,

I look at every issue. It's interesting and it's well done. So far, however, I haven't found an article yet that I would "clip and save". I've found more of personal interest in the Aussie emag. Now if I could just find where I put the link to it.

I like the pdf format as it is convenient to store on my local disk.
The magazine is great and I do appreciate the work of the editors.

Even so, I'm still not going to be reading something like on my Droid. That's painful.

It's a solid use case for an iPad, but not enough of one to shell out the coin for one.

Terry was all about buying choo choos and taking them out of the box.  Now that's moe-delling!!!

Off topic: It's an interesting process trying to get those characters to "speak English," isn't it? I'm working on some scripts right now.

Funnily, I take my paper mags and scan the articles I want to keep, into PDFs. It's the most convenient form when moving, which I've done a lot of in the last 10 years. I wouldn't think of doing so for my RR library though, which is many boxes deep at this point. That being said, for a purely electronic format, I much prefer the blog, BB, or list format.

There's one such site that concentrates on N scale and has a number of fine articles on scratchbuilding (sadly, I can't find the URL) that is the best example I've seen of that format yet. It has 'series' posted as the writer moves forward with the project. Though its 'article' organization isn't intuitive and I spend too much time trying to figure out the posts' chronological order, it seems the best use of the internet in terms of MRRing, IMO. I like its combination of a feature-type layout, with a modeler presenting a project from start to finish (like articles), and being able to provide feedback and encouragement by responding to posts. Besides the site's organization, the timing of contributions, which is sporadic, can be annoying. In large part, for me, it's because the modeling's so good it has me on the edge of my seat.

I would appreciate that format even more if, at the end of the series, it would be condensed into an article in a PDF format in its entirety. I would even pay a few bucks for that option of keeping it in perpetuity, and the modelers and site developers could make a bit of money, a reward for a job well done.

Now, if someone knows of the site I am speaking of and can provide me with the URL, I would be grateful if you'd relieve my senior moment.

John Drye is the N Scale columnist for MRH these days. I pulled out because I wasn't actively building an N Sale layout and the ethics requirements of my day job job.

John is not a member of Railwire as he tends to stay off forums, but he is looking for feedback and ideas for N Scale material for his column. He is trying to expand beyond the "this is what I did in my basement" column (though I think that isn't actually that bad an idea.)

So if you have any ideas, post them here or email me at info@alkemscalemodels.com and I will pass them to John.

John started a blog about his PRR Horseshoe Curve layout so you can see some of his progress. Unfortunately, he doesn't update it very often, but they are making progress on it.   http://prrhc.blogspot.com/

Yep, jfugate's on here ... been reading this thread with interest but had to drop by and comment.

As to N scale articles - we'd love to publish more. The one mistake readers make is assuming lack of a certain kind of article means the publisher is biased against publishing articles on that topic.

If we're biased at all - it's wanting MORE N scale stuff. Unfortunately, 99% of what gets submitted is HO. If we get the rare N scale article, it goes to the top of our review for publication list. Now the article does need to have above average photography and some adequate modeling for us to give it serious consideration - but that applies regardless of scale.

The deck is stacked against us somewhat as to N scale submissions because there's TWO (count them, T-W-O) N-scale specific magazines out there already. That will tend to suck up most N scale articles and leave the rest of us high-and-dry. However, we do pay you once we have determined where on the schedule we will publish your article (we call that "upon acceptance"), so you don't have to wait for publication to get compensated.

Any N scale authors out there? Care to give MRH a try? Keep in mind we can do videos and animations too, and we pay a premium for them.

Welcome to The Railwire Joe!

I hope you'll swing by occasionally to comment too, not just on MRH threads because it seems like you're quite the talented guy (and that's who's coat tails we like to ride on around here!).

Lol.

In all actuality, do you guys required 300DPI CMYK images like the print mags? Or does 72 work for you?I've always meant to ask.

I am a subscriber and the only real complaint for me is the same complaint I have for Model Railroader. I don't like all the DCC and electronics articles. But hey I can skip past those and I imagine a lot of other like them.

I like the layout visits you guys do. In the last one you guys had that On3 layout. I have seen it 3-4 times in print, but really yours was the best yet (and that is even without the video) I like to see overall shots of layouts even unfinished spots. MR will do a layout that seems great, but only give us 4-5 photos. I also like your little interviews with the layout owners.

And I model in N scale, but I don't need to see N scale trains in the articles. This is why I don't subscribe to either of the N scale mags. I can be inspired by any nice modeling.
