Maybe some enterprising Canuck will barter some of your toilets that still really flush for some Yankee Solvaset, Dullcoat and Goo.  You might even want some real lightbulbs, too.   ;D

You actually think that we don't have rules requiring low flush toilets here, too? Like I said before, stupid law = Canada is already implementing it. We have a shortage of water here, don't cha know?

I suppose that the eco-mafia only drop raisins in the bowl?

What are the painting EMD locos with - water colors or are they sending them to Altoona to get painted?

As for toilets - Since I live near D.C., I always flush twice because the White House needs the water.

Just happened to read this since I last posted.  Talk about government stupidity.

Feds Making NYCity Spend $27M to Change Lettering on Street Signs
Posted by Guest Contributor on Thursday, September 30, 2010, 2:00 PM
-By Warner Todd Huston

So you are a busy federal agency with lots and lots to do. You have roads to build, bridges to reinforce, and infrastructure to shore up, but there is something gnawing at your paper pushing soul. It’s those darn street signs in New York City and others. So, like a good, jackbooted government automaton, you storm down to that offending city and demand it spend $27million to change the lettering on those darn signs. I mean it’s not like you have anything else to do, right?

Well, it may seem like a joke but this is precisely what has happened. The Federal Highway Administration has demanded that New York City and other cities change street signs from all upper case to upper and lower (i.e. BROADWAY to Broadway) and it is going to cost an estimated $27 million of the taxpayer’s money to do it in New York City alone.

The city reports that 11,000 signs will have been changed by the end of this fiscal year and the rest will be done by 2018.

So why is this waste of money being forced on the nation from our masters in Washingon? Because the federal government has changed its street sign regulations. In all its brilliance, this federal agency has determined that all caps signs are harder to read and might cause accidents as drivers take too long to read signs while driving.

See. It’s all because the feds are worried about your safety. As your taxes go up every year for regulatory silliness such as this, doesn’t it make you all warm inside that the feds care about your safety?

Certainly we all want the safest street signs possible. But these millions wasted all at once by federal fiat is not the right way to go. Replacing the signs when new signs are needed or using the new regulatory scheme on all new signs from this point forward is the proper way to address this situation, especially in this day when we are all taxed to death and have states and cities with budgets so far in the red that bankruptcy is a real possibility.

But what this really shows is the outrageous overstepping of power that the federal government wallows in these days. Regulations such as this passed down from the federal government, violating local control of our lives is the perfect example of how our federal government has gone so far off track.

Yet all is not lost. In its magnanimity the feds have given the little people 15 years to toe the line before that jackboot comes down on their necks. See. They DO care about us!

This is straying way beyond the N Scale Zone and headed for the Twilight Zone.

There's a local radio host who refers to our government as "Absurdistan"...  Boy, if that doesn't illustrate what's going on in that article, I don't know what is!

I think the simple solution is to have Congress limited to meeting once a year for 30 days.  And state legislatures, 14 days every other year.  If they can't deal with an issue in that time frame, then it isn't that damn important.

Neither man nor beast is safe as long as the General Assembly is powlabbering in Annapolis!

Likewise, the bureaucracy should be apportioned according to population just like the Congress is.  Maybe 1 government employee per 1 million people.  The only exception would be the post office and the military, since they're the only agencies that actually do anything.

Hmm, now I'm confused.  Is this a good time or bad time to be moving to Canada?

Actually, the sign thing from NYC is much more than just changing cases on the signs.  The lettering also must be a minimum of 4 inches in height; there are only 4 background colors that are allowed (green, blue, brown and black)- and that's just for the street name signs.

ALL signs must meet a new reflective standard, which means they must be easier to see at night. The new materials are very nice, but also about 2.5 times more expensive than the previous norm.  Also, the previous norm required the use of little glass beads that had an environmental issue during processing so voila! environmental issue begone!  And we must develop a database and regularly inspect our signs to ensure they still can be seen at night.  And if you don't do this and there is an accident on one of your roadways and ambulance-chasing lawyer will sue the pants off of you and your local government entity for not following 'standard' protocol.

BTW, one of the accepted methods of inspection is to have a 'trained individual' drive and inspect these signs at night, and they MUST use an SUV or pickup truck (gasp!).  A goverment reg requiring the use of a gas-guzzling unsafe SUV!  Oh- and the inspector MUST be AT LEAST 60 years of age.  Any takers on this list?

Does the SUV have a CD player so I can play my old punk records while I inspect?
