So who owned the prototype cars, when did they run the rails, and where did they operate?

Poultry cars were an aspect of pre-industrial production of poultry.
By the late 1920s there were over 2,800 poultry cars on the nation’s railroads.
Some cars still were in use in the 1940s and perhaps early 1950s
The Railway Bull Shippers Group has many prototype photos and almost two hundred message posts on this subject. Just enter the word Poultry into the Search Box on the Messages Tab.

Almost 10 years elapsed between posts...  This may be the Zombie Post of the Century.

So, @sirenwerks ... why DID those chickens cross the (rail)road?

10 years was long enough for Mark to find photos of the kit:

I purchased this one from a club member about 6 years ago. He did not have any decals, however. It does have trucks and couplers ...........

I have thought about a BLI chiken car to remove their shell and place this over it. Don't know the dimensions of the BLI car.

I recently built this kit and found it very well made. The etching well done and easy to assemble. The decals crisp and did not break up even with their age. I had never assembled a brass car and found it very satisfying to have something different on the layout. I really loved the see through screening. The only fault was no elevated roof walk venting as I found in my research. It was very interesting to read that this car had attendants that rode in the center section to keep their stock well cared for during transit.  Rick

Almost 10 years elapsed between posts...  Lee

Someone pointed the thread out to me last year. We were expecting to have a similar car this year. It is all ready. but the etch company is in furlough [until today - they have just written to me but now have an eight week backlog], so Poultry Cars will be back on the market soon. [with chickens - but no sound!] There are a couple of roads and companies that ran them - so there will be decals for both the Live Poultry Transportation Co and the Palace Poultry Car.

The drawings that I have do not show the roof vents - so if someone can send me come details [Rick] I would be very grateful.

I want a poultry car.

On the top of my list of cars I want is a vinegar car. Ambroid used to make an HO kit, I built a few but I would love one in N scale !
I now have about 10 different pickle cars, A few from N scale architect and a few from AMB built on Fine N scale flatcars.

How about the one that IIRC was made by Roco for Atlas?  It has been released several times over the years. Last time it was done by MTL (few years ago).

I have a few of those, I have a funny feeling that they are a bit out of scale. When I compare them to the Atlas 11,000 tank car for example the vinegar car is much bigger.

Probably, though there were quite a few prototypes. There was a great thread on the old A-Forum about the prototype for the Atlas/Roco car, but alas.

Here's one in '68:

EDIT: A1G for the win! George Irwin did the research and apparently the Atlas car is from an article in Model Railroader in 1955 - a "Hinkley and Schmidt" "spring water" car.

Yes, those photos prove that the Roco tank is a bit on the large side.  Maybe we could convince  one of the 3D modelers on TRW to render a more prototypical one on their Photon?

I think my original "Atlas Austria" Milwaukee Vinegar car lost all its value when the original factory brakewheel fell out and joined all the other missing brakewheels and MT coupler springs in one of my 3 vacuums....

I have a mind like a steel trap...a VERY rusty, old steel trap.

Steve Sandifer's  book on Santa Fe live stock operations published last year has a couple of pages on poultry cars, and a view of the roof of one (with vents open).

Also Brass gtrains have nice pictures of a brass verson: [size=78%]https://www.brasstrains.com/classic/Product/Detail/055345/HO-Brass-Model-Train-OMI-1388-Overland-Palace-Poultry-Car-1920-1950-Era-5131-Custom[/size]

Hope this helps
