Has any mfr. ever released a car (or loco) without printed numbering, but including a decal or dry-transfer sheet so you can make it any road number you like?   Not exactly RTR, but maybe there is a niche for it.

Ed

Lots of releases have come un-numbered/named.  Kato and Atlas used to do it on locomotive releases, but never included decals with the model, leaving the modeler to fend for themselves.

Unnumbered/Unnamed and actually including decals in N scale?  Only the Walther's passenger cars come to mind at the moment.

Let's see then..Athearn,BLMA,MT,ExactRail(?) has release cars with body mounted couplers..That's a start in the right direction.

The first was Intermountain. :P

Micro-Trains cabooses, but who's keeping track?

I guess I'm not that's fer sure!!! :o ;)

I had no idee all those other fellas had released cars with body mounted couplers.

Suppose
that the classic Con-Cor caboose qualifies as body mounted too, although the conversion to knuckles is a trick I'm glad to never have to do again...

hahaha

If you include cabooses then we go back to the 1960s for the Atlas/Rivarossi bay window caboose for body mounted. ;D

The deLuxe Maxi-III was one of the first (non-MTL) to be supplied with body mounted MTLs.

Micro-Trains cabooses, but who's keeping track?

Actually, Atlas cabooses with body-mounted rapido couplers pre-date the MTL cabooses.  But in looking at freight equipment only, InterMountain was first with to offer cars with body-mounted couplers AND correct ride height with the 60' flatcar and the Pfaudler milk reefers.  The ESM gondola followed, and the BLMA CD4000 followed after that.
