Making progress de-USRA-ing a Bachmann USRA (0-6-0 ) 2-6-2 . Air pipe lines need redoing .

My helix occupancy circuit project resumed this week with arrival of the holders for the LED emitters and detectors on either side of the track.  They were designed by my friend Mark Dance for his CP Rail Columbia & Western layout and were produced in aluminum on a water jet cutter.  The opening for the diodes is designed to hold them firmly and precisely yet enable them to be adjusted in aim.   The design was modified slightly for my installation with the addition of fold down tabs to help locate the holder on the edge of the helix sub-roadbed.

The photograph below shows the holders as they come out of the cutter and after bending into the desired shape:




Here is a pair of the holders sitting on the helix sub-roadbed for a test fit:




This week also saw completion of the eight UNPX rotary gondolas.  Six cars were finished with transverse air brake reservoirs and side logo plates for the PROCOR 'Flying P' logogram:




The last two cars were completed with longitudinal air brake reservoirs and without side logo plates, as they will receive the later PROCOR word mark scheme:




With all eight cars built and ready for painting, it was time for a test run up and down the helix:

Got the motor mounted and everything running again. Here it is next to what I started with:

I'm taking the week off, but I've got a couple of projects going that will hopefully be ready for photographing soon.  If anyone is interested in reading the full account of the Pennsylvania Special, I posted it over on my website under News. Those look great!   Have you considered marketing them?   They should work well in any kind of staging area, and in most scales.

Man, those etched details are awesome!   Can't wait to see what they look like painted and weathered!

making progress on the benchwork - i have some cuts to make today and it should be nearly complete.

I modified a T Gauge Kiha 40 mechanism. Before:

The mechanism has been shortened to make a 1:450 F7A.

Worked on some intermountain kits this past week.  I filed down the truck bolsters to lower the body, body mounted z scale couplers, and added a light weathering job after I got them assembled.
