if you have the Pentrex "Working on the Railroad" video this might look familiar.  BNSF use this equipment and the tie carts that zip along the tops are well detailed.  it if you don't have that video, i suggest you get it

So they automated tie replacement and ballast profiling, but they have guys sitting on powered stools to seat the insulators and clips?  Man, there goes my opinion of German ingenuity!

David, we now expect the train on a train in T-gauge by the end of next week . . . .

That was what I thought too.  It seems like it could be automated just as easily as everything else in the video.  In fact, it was almost comical and dangerous at the same time.

Maybe those jobs are somehow protected by a union?

this is the last chance for someone to point out a problem with the tie, the clip, or the pad.  if any of them are defective, the person can stop things.  the ties are spaced by eye by the controller - they are not a set distance
