Dan,

I have that chassis, but the gear ratio is waaaaaay too low and it runs like a rocket. Here is the one I built running:

Figured I would post this to a thread and keep updating, maybe that way I will keep working on it. It is a N scale switching layout that is freelance, but based on the many New York harbor terminals that were isolated and only reached by a car float. The basic plan is from Bernard Kempinski in the MRP 2003:

I am not modeling the same area, but liked the plan. So mine will be a fictitious terminal of the Erie. I don't have any fancy track planning software, but here is my adaptation in CAD:

Bernard's plan used two 10"x36" sections. I will use a 12"x48" section on the right and a 14.5"x48" section on the left.

That plan was restricted by Tony Koester's requirement to fit on a bookshelf. This was one case where I actually built the layout and would say that it was too cramped. If I were to do it again, I would definitely make the yard longer and maybe a little wider to allow more scenic depth. It looks like you  are doing that, so that should help.

If you have my book you can see some other track plans for the same prototype in HO in a larger space. The Bush Terminal is a neat prototype that has a lot to offer for a switching layout.

Carfloat area update:

Looks great. Your're really capturing the look of NYC carfloats.

Official re-launch party  ;D

I'll start right were I left off and lay planks on the float bridge.

I think I'll skip the Long Island mini boxcab though...  ::)

Well...  Things look pretty much the same. All track is down.  I used some sort of MDF for the layout deck. I used the same stuff for a Z scale layout and s soon as sculptamold was applied it warped on me. Even though a primed it all first, there are still small bare areas here and there that I'm worried about. There wouldn't be many scenic elements, but I gotta get it wet to scenic. Maybe when I paint the track I can coat the whole deck.

Might want to try varnish.

A little surreal, I started re-reading on page 1 and saw Gregg's post and realized that it's been a little over a year.  :'(
