Yesterday at St Denis.  A Eastbound off the OML gets a stop signal.  This mixed freight has 2 SD-40-2 and an SD50.

A few minutes later an Eastbound empty trash train pulls alongside and also stops for signals.

Don't know what the hold up was but these trains waited almost an hour before moving.

I like the comparison of the SD-40's.  One grundy ans rusting and the other looks like it's just out of the paint shop.

Bob, that lead unit looks Tom Mann worthy!  Did you get a good side shot?

Nope, just these shots. Another interesting thing is that the clean unit was marked as an SD40.  Think someone forgot to finish the stencil.

Bob,
That is and SD40.  Note the flexi-coil trucks and the shorter porches.  8396 is apparently still running around, which was originally WM 7445.  I believe what you have there is an old B&O unit.

Edit:  Hmmm.  Railpictures has a bunch of shots of it, all listed as an SD-40-2, but the engine looks like a straight 40... perhaps it had its internals rebuilt.  I think they did a lot of that.  It doesn't appear on the B&O all time roster, so maybe it came from the Family Lines somewhere...

Despite the C&O-style battery box cover, my sources show that CSX SD40-2 #8357 is ex-SBD SD40 #8357 (exx-SBD #8298, nee CRR #3023).  CSX rebuilt and upgraded the SD40 to Dash-2 standards at some point subsequent to the Chessie System/Seaboard System merger.

Yep, my source also lists it as ex CRR 3023.

Almost forgot to post this one.  One of about 6 or 7 on a Westbound.

My take on Cassandra helpers back in '07.  I like that spot...

I went by St. Denis yesterday for an hour after dropping off my lovely bride at BWI.

All I saw was this lite MARC move from Baltimore to DC:
