Ah... Rail Yard Models. That's where this quest began about three years ago. After the group purchase for the coil cars, a few of us asked them to do their X58 in N scale. Lets just say they were not enthusiastic about the N scale resin kit market.

So many of us attempted to get the X58 produced by Fine N Scale, FVM, and lately ESM. ESM seems to have our collective backs in this forum, and I think we return the favor by purchasing anything they make. I have been looking for a good X58 for years. I was even about to kitbash a Precision Design box into one (with new ribs, door, side stills. This makes my life MUCH easier!

Bryan, how about some eastern (NYC) style bay window cabooses, G43 or G47 gondolas? These were used in multiple eras from PRR to current (I just photographed one last week).

Finally this car is being produced.  I hope everyone will support this project by pre-ordering these cars.

I will definately be placing an order. Which scheme(s) will be the only question.

NSR hit the shelves a week earlier than usual, so I didn't expect this to break today.  Yes, the model is being announced two years early, but most of the fellow manufacturers and other sources have known for at least a year and the time was right to make it public knowledge.

There will be a ton of releases in this series, with six physical configurations possible.  Every model in the series will be based on an actual prototype (X58, X58A, X58B or X58C) backed up with photos so no two cars will be alike - a feat much easier to accomplish on models based on prototypes of the 1960s+.  Included will be many fallen flag schemes, so there will be variety for modelers of all late 20th century eras.  The present game plan is to concentrate on getting the XIH project established over the next year, then to switch full attention to the X58.  As I believe I mentioned a few months back (though not by name), design work is complete and it's a matter of freeing up capital currently invested in the XIH project.  The C&O well car will follow the X58 most likely in 2013.

Reservations are a while off, but everyone will have plenty of opportunity to reserve his/her desired quantities.  The first release of course will be the as-built body configuration with five PRR cars and two LV cars, all different schemes and classes.  Releases following will include as-builts, re-stencils, re-paints, schemes with successor reporting marks, vintage schemes with modern markings, etcetera.  I know it's a long wait, but I believe everyone will be pleased with the final product.

Strictly speaking the X58 is too new for my era, but I assume that I will end up with a couple of cars as long as the have roofwalks.

With the average age of model railroaders getting older and older I wonder how many will still be here in 20 months.  Maybe the trick to the whole preorder system is to get the customers to commit their money before they croak.  Did ya ever think about that, well, did ya?   ??? ??? ???

Well, since no money/reservations will be solicited prior to the fall of 2011, the odds of customers dying within that future three-month window are no greater than those currently waiting for the MTL heavyweights to arrive.  I doubt that the potential customer pool will shrink noticeably in a year and a half, if at all.  

Given your logic, if the car was released tomorrow, it's viable life span would be two years or so.  If that were the case, no current manufacturer would offer any new tooling.  And, since the MSRP will be higher than you feel is warranted, you won't want to purchase one anyway so your argument is moot.
