Hi, Bob!

Yeah, it happens.  Probably more than we'll ever know.  Here's a few that I've caught while trackside:

It seems to be a fairly common thing

I've never seen that paint scheme or style ditchlights before.

If N scale had good SD40-2s, C30-7s, U30Cs, SD45s, SD40s, and SW10s; I'd be in N scale.

I've never seen that paint scheme or style ditchlights before.

It's a post-"stealth" scheme but pre-yn2 ("bright future" or "hockey stick" scheme).  Here's another picture taken just seconds later, which explains why it's such a poorly timed shot and blurry, but, hopefully, it will give you a more thorough view of this old paint scheme.  This locomotive is CSX SD40-2 #8414 and is former C&O SD40 #7563 (nee #7463) rebuilt into an SD40-2 by the railroad in 1990.  These pictures were taken on January 12, 2008 at Aiken (Perryville), Maryland on the Philly Subdivision (ex-B&O).

Hope this helps,
DFF

EDIT: Hmm.  How about that?  The unit survives, as of January 2010, in its old paint.

I've found that CSX is much more prone to this than NS, or most other roads, actually.
