I like what it does to the brickwork in the background.

I wonder how it could be applied to models.  Can you imagine how many shots you'll need to get the Helicon and this software to work?  You will need several shots at each focus setting to get the dynamic range, then adjust focus, get more dynamic range shots, etc.

It looks to me like all it did was introduce a bunch of noise to the photo.

What's it supposed to accomplish?

To me it seems to make the details stand out more, but I guess it exaggerates the colors a bit. My example above isn't that good, here are HDR images:

For focal points, it seems to do well...  in your last example.

I'm not sure that I like the full effect, though.  It made the building look terrible.  (and surreal)

While the final effects don't always look natural, I can see this being a valuable modeling tool, since it helps to pull details out of the shadows, such as trucks.

Naa that's the end of the line:

It used to extend further, but no longer. Also was a branch of the Erie.

Guess I've been obsessed with HDR images. Usually they look more real than real life to me.

One possible reason is that the results can be closer to what the eye actually perceives than any photograph, since, as they claim,

It is estimated that our eye can see over a dynamic range of nearly 24 f-stops while a digital camera can capture a dynamic range around 6 to 9 f-stops at best.

The software also does a lot more than just extend dynamic range. It can also produce some really funky effects...

Perhaps a better example.

There's a nasty halo over the right side of the cab roof and far right end of the loco.

The halo was added by me, I could have toggled it off. I figured it would give more difference between the two photos.

The boxcars down the line are storage for a large tire shop.

The old Youngstown Steel Door buildings are right behind and to the North of the engine house. Jerry DeBene used to switch this area and he says one of the OC's steam engines was re-built on this line.

I don't like many of these HDR images. They don't look natural to me despite the better ability to simulate the eyes'  dynamic range. This example looks like the saturation was boosted too high. Here is is with the saturation turned down a bit (maybe too much). Looks more natural to me.
