Just what I needed...

Another project!

As many of you know, I've been working on adding automobile loads to my fleet of MT open racks, and trying the best I can do them effectively, yet as cheaply as possible.  I started by bottom feeding on Ebay to buy the old Trix auto racks, denuding them of autos, then re-selling the empty car.  It works out to about $.50 per car if I do it right.

Next I was painting them up and adding window glass and so forth, to make them look more presentable.

Ah, much better!  But something still didn't look right.  The original wheels are tiny, and seem to sit too far back in the wheel wells, almost to the point of being invisible.  I was at a loss as to how to solve this problem, and do it both efficiently and economically.  Then these came into my life...

I bought a bag of 100 cars on Ebay for about $16 shipped, basically to see what I could do with them.  At that price, it's worth a small gamble.

Well, as it happens, the BMW looking one with the sun roof has the exact same wheelbase as the big Ford sedan and station wagon!, and with a little bit of modification, I can make the Mercedes base fit the Trix Mustang.  I must say the result is most pleasing!

First a little before and after... the Yellow car sports the stock wheels, and the white one is improved.

And here's the two cars I've done so far after adding the "jack up" kit.  They look a lot more realistic.

So, when I'm done, I'm wondering what to do with all the shells that will be cast aside.  I could send them to one of you modern era guys to build a junkyard, or maybe keep them around the house to make Halloween costumes for some waterbugs...

Back to work!

I'm going to black out the hubs on the ones I load on the racks...  they usually traveled with the jewelry in the trunk...

I have a bunch of these I got for about $6 off ebay.

Carter F 1st gave me the idea of using the wheels/chassis for Bachmann and other crap cars.

The new car shells themselves (as you can see on the mercedes above) suck (massive "pillars", etc)

Lee.  Was just going through and cleaning up some junk.  Came across one of those old auto racks (just the rack, no flat).  Top rack still loaded with cars.  Looks like you got some more to play with.
