Life imitates art

This is a little off beat but I got a kick out of it.  I thought it was interesting to see real life made to look like models.  The clip also seems to have something to offer about perspective and how it impacts realism and creating depth in a scene.

The clip is made with a camera fitted with a tilt-shift lens that allows the focal plane to be tilted and translated so that it intersects the camera sensor thus providing a narrow strip of focus. The speeded up footage and bright colors definitely give the real life subjects a model-like quality. The people look a little like stop motion animation.

An added bonus for me was that the shots are taken around Sydney Harbour and it is Australia Day, at least it was when I started this post!

Cool vid.  Still not sure I understand the point of it, but it's still pretty neat!

We covered this a bit a while back on how to do it manually for still shots.  Works best with high angle, center subjects.

The video stuff is cool, I wonder if you could do something with Adobe After Effects (or any other post software) if you didn't want to buy the lens.

Yes, but in most cases post-pro effects are far more labor-intensive (some of them prohibitively). The lens gives you the effect in-camera, in real time. You can also get tilt-shift lens mounts, so you can use your own lens and save some scratch.

Looks like Affter Effect CS3 is a fairly easy process; only a half a dozen steps and let it render.  Not as good as a lens may produce, but every bit as good as doing a still in Photoshop.
