I'm glad to see you found inspiration in one of my plans. The cool thing about that plan is can be expanded several different ways. I actually drew up a couple more expansions that still used the original sections, but they didn't make the book. Unfortunately they were lost is a hard drive directory failure that I have not been able to recover.

The other thing that is cool about the plan is that you can use a single sheet of plywood to cut the road bed.  My book includes a cutting diagram.

i'm not sure that David's plan can have the big loops cut from a single 4x8 - those are the toughest to do, looks like it's a 2 sheet job.  i'll just need to get those once the benchwork is ready

I've printed this out and have been staring at it for a couple of days.

Without hijacking your thread, my space is 11 X 9 and I've been working on plans for a while. Everything I do looks similar to this.

The river that runs through the top of the plan and disappears into the backdrop could be a challange to model.

I've got questions about a couple of tracks, too.
On the top, there's a spur off the passing siding. What's the purpose of this track?

Likewise, I don't understand the purpose of the siding that runs beside Pelton Road at the end of the yard. I thought it might be a drill lead, but it is positioned wrong for that.

And speaking of a drill lead - might want to think about adding one.

it's an industry - probably a stand in for the Harris Pine mill - it should be accessible - the actual scenic elements will differ.

that is a team track.  onions were a big deal at one time and they would load up refers with onions.

And speaking of a drill lead - might want to think about adding one.

the yard is not a classification yard, main line trains drop cars for the local to spot at the industries and to work the zinc mine.  the yard was setup to hold entire trains and all blocking was done at the yards on either end of the railroad.  the track that extends off the siding below Pelton Road is enough of a lead for the amount of traffic and the style of operation.  of course once it's built and operated for a while, it will probably be modified. 

regarding the river, the scenic elements are artistic impressions, the final scenery may or may not resemble what is drawn.

the only turnout that breaks the "2 foot" rule for accessibility is the one above Jones Chemical for the Franklin siding.  since there is access from the side at Elm Street, it shouldn't be too hard to get to.

Yes, all of the scenic elements were more or less just semi-random bits of art tossed in to suggest general terrain, as opposed to specific features. The "rivers" are more like creeks that might run through culverts as opposed to under bridges, which shouldn't pose any serious logistic problems. But as Steve says, everything could/probably will change when it's built.

I didn't see an industry on the top siding, but a little rearranging of the building can cure that.

On the yard, a little fiddling and it could probably serve multi-function, destination, classification and visible staging.

I'm a miserable track planner - most of the time I build the frame and lay track as it goes. I'm trying to do better this time, so I've been holding off on tearing out and re-building.

If you don't mind me messing with your plan, I'll probably see if I can double track it (I'm a lone wolf runner more than an operator) and spread it to 9 feet. This should give me the room to add a caboose track and maybe a line for ready power.

I was worried about the hidden storage, but my current layout has a successful staging area behind a one foot high ridge that I can reach behind on a stool. I goofed by making the area three foot from the wall, but that's part of the problem I have with the whole layout - I built it 3 X 8.

I'll see what I come up with, but doubt it will be as well thought out as this one.

pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

i was just roughing out the shape based on the existing benchwork trying to decide on a track height.  at 56", the longer reaches become a problem.  it looks more like it will be 52" - keep the height in mind when you are laying things out.

I like the higher level, but 42 works better for the family. I had hope to someday add a second level, but first the layout has to last a while - none have .

The overpass is in the plan; the station had to be relocated a little because it would have wound up between the track and the back edge of the layout. I'm sure with a little jiggling, things can still be worked in, albeit rearranged. Kinda like this--

that bridge will be a tough one to model - it was torn down a few years ago and i only have a few photos of it.  i'll do what i can...

things are progressing, the benchwork will be modified this weekend and if i can figure out how to get 2 sheets of plywood home, i can start getting the sub roadbed in place.
