I still haven't modernized the diaphragms on this one, but I guess it constitutes mostly scratchbuilt.  The interior is entirely scratchbuilt, as is most of the underframe.  The interior matches photos of the actual car (when it was still CR), including the fabric pattern on the couch in the lounge.  The depressed center section of the floor is a steel weight, which kept the center of gravity low and didn't take away precious space from fabricating the bar and private rooms on the lower deck.  I have to get this done and posted on the N_ScaleVarnish list, as I promised months ago.

These New Haven NE-4 cabooses started as MTL 50000-series cabooses with new sides, modified roofs and cupolas, stretch underframes and new roofwalks.  These cars are getting close to 20 years old.  These pics are from a couple of years ago, before I added the new MTL window glazing this year.  Still waiting for MTL to offer friction-bearing caboose trucks, as the cars sit too high on the Atlas version.

This is a modernization of the Atlas Airslide model with scratchbuilt ends, framework and roof, with the hatches salvaged and sanded down from the original roof.  The body between the outside posts is all that remains from two combined original Airslide models.  The brake hardware is from an Atlas PS-2.

John, those 89' TTX flats are begging to be turned into a Triple-53/Long Runner. Is that what they were at one time?

Well being as we are getting into some bashes , I have some .

And I guess these technically are kitbashes, but it was basically cutting up a few existing models into a whole bunch of little components and then reassembling.

The Reading PS-1 is mostly MTL parts:  50' plug door body between the ladders; ends from a 40' modern box w/o roofwalk; doors from the FMC modern box.  Side ladders are Gloor Craft or Grandt or Detail Associates, don't remember.  Body pieces were assembled and castings were made so I could have two regular RDG billboards and one with the U.S. Savings Bonds graphics.  Cushioned underframe is from channel brass.  ESM decals, which are the N scale version of an old Herald King set.



And finally, the FGE plug door reefer from the current NSR issue which is a combination of InterMountain and MTL components.

Sadly I think I have only one completed bash.




It's a 14 panel MT 'fish-belly' steel side gondola with the sides sanded straight and ends from an MT PS-1.  The rest came from an IM boxcar kit.

I hope to do another one and make an article out of it now that I've learned a couple mistakes.

Yes .. thats what they started as .. it was an RMC article from the 80's / 90's that I used as a guide .. If I were to do this again, I would try to find some steel to build the deck out of for the weight ..
