PRR/CR Middle Division Industry - What to Replace my Coal Mine With?

OK, so Ed's industry thread got me thinking...



This coal mine just doesn't generate any real interest for me...  It's on a spur right off the main with no switch lead.  It can't generate a whole trainload of coal cars, and frankly, mines like this were not usually right on the Middle Division.  They were mainly on branches out of Cresson and off the Bald Eagle branch, but along the Middle Division they came in via the H&BTM and EBT railroads.

After I finish the Enola yard, I plan to re-work the main layout with Lewisport becoming LewisTOWN...  So, what can I put where the coal mine is?

I thought about a lumber yard or even a brick yard.  The space is cramped, but the vertical mountain will be trimmed down quite a bit and populated with SuperTrees.

I checked the CTC1000 for the Pennsy on Jerry's site and nothing jumped out at me.  This would be for an industry somewhere near or west of Lewistown.  I don't think Standard Steel will fit in the space!

instead of alumber yard, why not an actual mill?  Thast close to the forrest raw materials are obvious, and if you did it open air pole-barn style there would be all sorts of neat superdetailing and animation opportunities.

Wasn't there actually a somewhat substantial factory in Lewistown? I think parts of it are still there.

Ed, you're thinking of American Viscose Co.  My Juniata Machine Tool Co will become that.  I need an additional industry.

Dave, I would put a farm machinery load out.. As you know or may not know New holland once had their load out in Lewistown.. The second trick yard job would go over to town and get the cars from the days loadings.. It was in the old PRR freight station over in town.. When the station became unsafe they built a new steel builing right along the main line near the old Lewis tower.. The axe factory (Mann Edge Tool) was also over in town.. They actually had a switch right in the street trackage.. There was also a scrap dealer there too.. There was a feed mill, coal company, oil plant, foundry and about fifteen others that served Lewistown.. Let me know I can come up with more, as you know I grew up here and OH yes worked the line and road it since I was five years old..

Thanks for the info!  I think something in the metals area would be great...  Either the scrap dealer or foundry, depending on space.  I have lots of gons in both eras I'd like to put to work!  Do you know the business names?

Actually, I think Dave ought to think in terms of two potential industries to replace the coal mine. I think the dual-era thing is a great concept, and this is a good opportunity to exercise the concept with a swappable industry. Perhaps some kind of metal fabrication factory for the PRR era (nice big brick building with loading dock and traveling crane), and then a scrap dealer for the CR era (quonset hut main building, a crawler-type crane for loading, and the foundation of the original brick building being used as bins for the scrap)...
