One of the gentlemen in our N-trak club is an Architect and brought in a brouchure that a company had been courting them with. It was exactly what you are describing. They were using it as backlit artwork and also had a very interesting application on in a suspended ceiling above a dentist chair so the patient had something to look at.

So I called them , and she said for clearstory windows of 63" X 18" the cost would be $2,025.00 without shipping . Talk about pricing yourself out of the market .  :-[

One reason this seems "too real" is that it's photoshopped. It would be really hard to reproduce the same effect in real life.

I agree, at least in theory.

It seems to be a light, diffuser and an image.

I'm sure the commercial version is very high end but it seems plausible to try it on the cheap.


What say the print experts here, what type of medium would this require and what is the printing cost?

Duratrans is one type of backlit film. Images are printed on the back side with a large-format printer, and are made to be backlit. Generally they are what you see in airports and malls. The light boxes you mount them to are usually milk white plex with fluorescent tubes behind that, with the duratrans sandwiched under thin clear plex overlay to keep it from wrinkling, and for protection.

They offer a calculator for square foot prices. I don't know ANYTHING about this place, it is just to give a price example.

You can look for a graphic arts service bureau in your town to see what a locally-produced version would cost you.

Generally, your photo file needs to be 100 DPI at 100% printed size.

In other words, if you want a 2'x4' backdrop, the file needs to be 24"x48" at 100 DPI. For sky, you could probably get away with 72 DPI... check with your vendor.

Wow that looks real as hell . If some manufacturer would sell that in a 25 foot roll , like wall paper , it would use on most layouts . Price would be the only question left . A repeat in design every 8 feet or so or cloudless gap would help splicing additional sections together .
