Wheels of Time's turtle roof 60' baggage cars are excellent models. The cars run very well; their detail is very good and they have done a good job on the paint and lettering. That said; they are not; and can not be expected to be prototypically correct for all liveries they were made in.
I reviewed the WOT car I bought in CNR's green and gold scheme and found the car to have some significant issues;
1. The colour was too "lime green". Even though the CNR green darkened considerably as the car aged, even the "as delivered" colour was darker than the WOT car.
2. The striping isn't yellow; it's faux gold. The letter board is also not correctly placed.
3. The roof of the model was plain jane.... the CN cars had three central roof vents and a smoke jack for the coal stove.
4. The doors......... the WOT car has two 5' doors with a single window. I haven't been able to find out which road this road was a prototype of, but it wasn't CN's. The cars in question had one 6' door with four pane windows and an 8' double door, two four foot doors with two panes each.
So; unless I wanted to strip and repaint the car, I'd have to carefully alter the colour - I did this by dry brushing True Line Trains CN green over the existing car until I liked the colour match.
I used Microscale decals to re-apply the faux gold strips and, after stripping the name off the boards, I used Microscale decals to re-letter the car in the correct position.
The roof was an easy fix; I made some styrene vents and stole a smoke jack from a caboose... easy peasy......
The doors presented two chalenges; one I could solve and one...well; not so much.
The right side door I cut into a 7 foot door. I did this because the rivet line was at 7 feet, not 8 feet and the doors need a rivet line right beside them or they look weird. In N scale 1 scale foot isn't a big deal to me so 7 feet it was. I made a double door out of styrene and corrected the windows.
The left hand door is a six foot door with four panes.... cutting one foot into the panel of the car would have been hard, and would have left me without a rivet line. In addition, I couldn't make a 6 foot door with four panes - I know, I tried... the styrene was just too fragile....so I left the five foot door (remember my 1 scale foot rule...?) and settled for a two pane windows.... closer but not perfect.
I weathered the car slightly and...........
The modified car is on the left with an "out of the box car" on the right. Notice the picture behind to see what 30 years of weather does to the paint colour.......
Here she is in service...
The car looks better and will run on CNR locals and in service when those CNR guys have to detour over the CPR's PVR.........
