That should be a "goodie", for sure! It's been several years since the old "Getting Started in N-Scale" book has been available, and I've had to advise many customers to buy 4-$20 K-bach books on N-scale. Pretty hard on the "newbies". Hey, a new 96 page book for $20 looks like one we'll try to keep in stock. We also need a new edition of "Scenery for Model Railroads" based on water-based products (from WS and the like) and using pink or blue insulation foam. It is MUCH harder to try and explain using foam for scenery than it is to do it! And then use all the Woodland Scenics stuff to make it look "real".  :-[

Per a thread on one forum from a couple years back (Foam Core Door Layouts) there was info from Marty about this book he had just completed to update the first edition. He mentioned he was doing a 4x8 layout to "replace" the Carolina Central  that was featured/reprinted. It was to be a Maine-based layout featuring the MEC  motive power in the "yellow' and green design. He also is including some of the newer offerings from Woodland Scenics in the building of the layout.

My understanding is that it is an update utilizing some of the new products available on the market (and some that aren't - like the ASM Mill buildings).  The project is a completely new layout based in New England. I think Marty still has it if anyone want to buy it. I'm sure he'd love to be rid of it.

Understand the anxiety by trivializing the color name, but simply not one I'm familiar with. Armour yellow, tuscan, brunswick green, SP grey, L&N gray...those I know. Don't spend a lot of time at the Floquil displays which provide the necessary distinctions we like to have.

But the scheme is very classy.

First of all, I'd describe the book as 75-90% all new material. There certainly isn't any "pick-up" articles and the like. Some of the basic information (wheel arrangements, grade tables and other things that don't change) are reprinted in this book, but I basically rewrote the entire thing.

I started a thread with an announcement about the book - I got my first copies yesterday. It's available from any Kalmbach dealer - or if you'd like a signed copy I'm selling them at my web site www.martymcguirk.com

And, the Androscoggin Central is for sale. It's a (roughly) 4 x 8 layout with eastern US fall scenery. I'd be happy to know it found a good home. Please e-mail me off list with serious inquiries.

At this point, I think Bernie is the only one who has seen a copy of the book (other than myself and the folks at Kalmbach. He picked up a copy at lunch. . .  and it's even signed.
