Haven't had a chance to get any lumber yet, so I've been working on some of the details.

The CGW still had high switch stands in Waterloo.




By the 60's there were metal plates attached to the poles to show which way they were thrown.  I'm still looking for info on those.

That wasn't too hard to find.  Doesn't look like there is a green counterpart.

I put down some new track and lined the edges with cinders. Also planted some small trees and grass along the ROW, still more to do though.



I'm thinking about putting a cornfield or some crop where the flat hardboard is right now...

Early this week...... gotta keep those eyes open Pud.....

After finishing the SOO coach and now planning a SOO head end car I needed some SOO power.... what to do, what to do.. and then this little guy fell into my lap....



Ok; so Model Power got the colour like "way wrong".... and made one of the "what up with that" errors with the head light... they make a single and a duel head light version.... SOO FP's were all duel... so MP makes the SOO offering in a single... figures.......

A little work made this cheapie a lot better..... a lower head light was added with brass tube and lens; the grills were given some faux treatment and the locomotive was weathered and had a few details added.... A wash of Wisc Central maroon and dirt helped the coliur....





Here she is leading a freight.... so if we have a freight consist, we need a caboose.... I dug out one of my favorite hacks...................



I love this caboose; and thank the brain trust of the SOO that thought white was a good idea..... I get to see this very caboose whenever I want to as well; as it's still in service at CP's Havelock yard.....

If you have a SOO loco and a SOO caboose then you better break out the SOO rolling stock too.........



It was a real SOO love in on the Samuel Ridge this week....... oh well; so SOO me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Completed the artwork for the Overhead Crane Rails several RailWire members asked for. It was made for the Walthers Crane and will be 5.75" long, but more than one can be joined together. I also made progress on the Train Shed I need to build for a client. I also posted in that thread.

After a few busy weeks with start-up of school and looking after house guests, its back to work on the railway.  I am hoping to be able to run trains into and out of the helix in time for a private layout tour as part of Trains 2009 in November.

This week was spent installing approximately 225 eye screws inside the helix which will carry the bus wires:




In the next photo you can see short lengths of 14AWG wire positioned inside a few of the eye screws to illustrate how it will work:




I have also been running a train up and down the helix to verify that it is still working well.

I have to ask why all those screws?? On my helix I ran my
bus wire and feeds up and down in just two spots 180 degrees
from each other. This way every loop around was fed in two
places. You'll also save a lot of wire.

Thanks, guys. As it happened, after seeing the images "in print," I became dissatisfied with two aspects of the battery box. One, the wire conduit was waaay too fat; the other was that I didn't do a very good job of finishing off the chain across the lid. So I replaced the wire conduit with something closer to reality, and also installed two more lift rings to serve as attachments for the lid chain. Then I took a better photo.

Nice job on that caboose . I find in interesting , though logical that the icicles are forming at the bottom of the rust streaks .

Thanks - I just love this old hack - it runs three times a week up 20 odd miles to a nephlene (sp?) mine and back to the Havelock yard. It usually sits right beside the old station, which is now a pub.... I've been watching this thing for years now and it always captures my attention.... and Sammy's too..............I showed the model to one of the crew and they loved it, posed for a picture with it by one of their mates... great fun !

I did the same thing. It worked quite well and saves tons of wire. Not to mention that wire loses power of distance.
