Looks like the model is too long for the prototype of both the H2a and the H10.

It is. Since this is the only peaked end 3 bay rib side 70 tonner in N scale, compromise is unavoidable.

And since the peaked end is an N&W "signature" feature of nearly 100% of all N&W (coal) hoppers built from the early 30s through the early 1960s, peaked end triples are rather essential to modeling N&W from the 1940s to the 1980s.

(well, not completely unavoidable, I guess I could scratchbuild or kitbash 50 of these suckers!)

What years would those woodchip cars been used in service?

I can't speak for all the roads but the C&O's were converted from 70 ton hoppers in 1962. I checked the C&O's color guide and there were a bunch. There is a picture of a car being loaded in Doswell Virginia in 1978. The industry consisited of a conveyer loading the car with a trailer converted foe hauling woodchips next to the loading track.

Hmm Bethpage, NY,  thats right in my backyard.  Wonder what made them go that route.  No complaints, that Long Island is finnally geteting some love.

Wow, they can re-run DC and Chi-town but not feeling the Brotherly Love with and skips over Philly again.

I am just as surprised as you, especially with the long history of RR and freight here on the island as well as military history.  Good for them, going with something that unique.

The wood chip cars are kinda cool. Were these types of cars pretty much in captive service or would you see them in interchange? ??? (I don't remember seeing any foreign road wood chip cars on N&W).

Interchange possible 70's and before. Since it was generally a low-revenue product. The mileage hauls were not usually longer disatances but interchange did occur even though the charges added to the customer cost.

Hmm, looks like they ignored my detailed emails and decided to letter these for Class H10 ... :

The hopper body is a better match for the H2a. Oh well, either way it's a stand-in but why did I waste my time explaining to them the difference in the end sheet slopes?

But let's say we roll with the H10 class ... the artwork looks very good!

SOMEBODY needs to tell Athearn that the H10 class was 34000-41999 (the artwork shows #279072 for the 1963 scheme and #76501 for the 1951 scheme). Hopefully the actual production will have the correct number series, but ...

(number series in the artwork happen to be from the ex-NKP offset hoppers (279072) they did, and the H-34 VGN hoppers N&W completed in 1960 (76501) - so hopefully it's the artist being lazy and the production models will be correct)

I'm gonna try to talk to someone at Athearn via phone - I hope it's not too late.

I'm about 95% done on the artwork for the 1951-1963 lettering, and about 70% done on the 1963-1970 lettering. When my job isn't eating up 90 hours of my time a week (including commute) I'll finish 'em up.

Of course I can't do them at home, them being white and whatnot ...

Athearn can do this right, so why should'nt they?

You could say that every month of Athearn's releases.  Some of their artwork isn't even drawn, it's just auto traced through whatever graphics program they are using.  If you zoom in it's nothing but jagged lines.

So if you buy an automobile that was supposed to be cherry red with a black racing stripe and you get purple with a neon yellow racing stripe... you should just accept it and pay to have the auto repainted in the scheme you paid for?

I don't get the reference.  Is Athearn somehow not delivering what they say?  Did Mark somehow order these ahead of time with the undestanding from Athearn that they would be a certain way? 

It's not even the right car, right?  So are we talking about the accuracy of a car/paint scheme combo that never existed?
