As I've been unpacking and checking out my old equipment, I came upon my RS-1. It is the old Kato version.

It has a problem with a slipping universal. Looking at the differences in the technology, would I be better to just get a Classic RS-1 and change the bodies?

The alternative with parts availability seems to be new flywheels and drive shafts with the hex nuts. That still leaves the old style trucks.

Does anyone know if the old body will go on the new mech? It's a custom painted body from the days when I used an airbrush and Floquil paints and I'd really like to have it running again.

Any advice is welcomed.

Atlas still sells parts for the older model.  I've gotten parts for these.

Is the universal slipping on the motor shaft?  If so, put a dot of CA on the shaft, then snug the U back onto it.  I suggest you use the gel variety of CA so it doesn't end up going where you don't want it...  Just be careful that it ends up where you want it!  I've done a few of these like that, and so far it's worked out to be a permanent fix.

Continuing - I found another RS-1 that I got off the auction site. After cleaning the crud from the wheels and gears, I found it to have the same problem with one side.
This is the cup like part that goes on the worm shaft.
I made one working mech out of the two.
I'm out of Gel ACC, but will try to pick some up today and try Lee's fix for the second mech.

Victor uses Loctite when he makes repairs like this.  I use the gel CA because I buy it by the ton at Dollar Tree, so it was close at hand.  So far it works fine.

Finally got time to get to the Dollar store.
Lee's tip worked great and the old girl is running again.

On a side note - the gel ACC is a blast - I keep looking for things to use it on.

Glad I could help.  You can try it on toilet seats, toothpaste caps, telephone handsets, and my favorite, affixing quarters to the pavement.

After trying dozen of things on my and customers locomotives, I've found blue Locktite (brand) or the black "flexible" CA to be the best-holding and longest lasting fix. I won't swear to it, but I don't believe you can interchange the "Classic" and the newer RS-1 shells/mechanisms. I don't think Atlas would stock two different shells and sets of parts if it wasn't needed. ??? PS: Clean the shafts with 91% isopropyl alcohol (any drug store) or IF you know how to handle/use it, acetone to remove any traces of oil/lube from the shafts. Acetone is danergous is not handled properly (so is water!) so read all the warnings on the can and HEED them if you chose to use it.
