Thanks for all the kind words, guys. That scene has been a couple of years in the making. Funny, though, even with the track and the signals and all that, the bit I was most pleased by was the switchstand.



Still not finished, though. Need to make the crossing signal for the right side of the grade crossing. There's a hole in the layout waiting for it, temporarily covered by a tuft of grass in the photo--the one at the end of the station platform.

From time to time my unit, the Air Force Weather Agency, constructs and the raffles off a model railroad as part of the Top III Sub for Santa program.  The proceeds of the raffle go to help offset the December bills for the family of a deployed or needy Airman, so that they can buy gifts for their kids at Christmas.

This year I volunteered to help organize the effort, and we settled on N scale and modern day UP/BNSF in the Council Bluffs, IA area.  Walthers was kind enough to donate a grain elevator kit which I built this week:









This is a DRAMATIC departure from my usual theme, but a lot of fun.  This is a great way to scratch a modern-day UP/BNSF itch without scrapping my Conrail and Pennsy!

Some really cool stuff on here tonight. Chris, that switch stand is really nice!!!!!!!!!! Wendell, it's nice to see you have started on your bench work. I can see a road trip to your place in the future. Mec_Fan, maybe next weekend I'll give you a hand getting that yard upstairs.
I hurt my back a few days ago and have been on light duty which meant I had some time to myself to do a laser kit from Creative Laser Design. He makes some great looking models of New England flavor specifically Vermont!!! Right up my alley for the Central Vermont.

I have built it pretty much straight forward with a few detail changes to make it a little more unique. I scrounged around in my detail boxes and came up with a wooden cellar door, brick chimney, cinder block chimney and some posts for the front porch that have yet too be put on. I also have some lights to hang over the garage doors.

Wendell glad to see you getting going, like CV said maybe a roadtrip is in order. CV the house looks good what did it come with for roofing. If I get all the feeds on we can install it.

Like James, just negative progress for me.  I had been weathering some auto racks, coil cars and tankers and had them packed in a box awaiting the next step.  Alas, said box got caught by stray cord and went hard to the floor with contents spewing every which way.   :'(  Fortunately the damage was not too severe.  Now I'm back in California on a short trip. I'm hoping to have enough time for a quick jaunt to Cajon on Tuesday before my return flight.

Great stuff again this week.  Looks like David has managed to scare off most of the competition on the Trainboard contest with his stunning early entry.   :

Can non-USAF personnel get in on the raffle?  I'd love to help out, as I have more then a few friends in uniform (albeit Army green).  Let us know.

As to modeling - I spent some dough on ebay and in Seattle (!) last week to round out my tank car collection for the refinery, continued with the FVm wheel replacement program, did laundry, and spent time with my daughters.  Yes, I was on the road all last week (and will be again starting tomorrow), so trains took fifth seat or something like that.

Not quite finished yet. Still need Microscale to send me the lettering decals I need for the FEC below the number boards.  Should have it by next weekend.  From the picture, looks like I need to file down the LED on the decoder a little more to let the cab sit flush.  This one is a full paint and detail job from an Undecorated SD40-2 Mid.  The ditch lights are in the wrong spot, but I can live with that (for now anyway  : )
