True Line Trains RS 10

True Line Trains brought out their RS 10's and 18's a few years ago and, like many eager Canucks; I bought a wack of these unique Canadian units.

Here's the prototype.....

Until recently I hadn't done much with them but with a bit of time on my hands I brought out the CP Rail RS 10 and "pretty'd her up for the dance"....

True Line utilized an Atlas frame and motor and then commisioned a new shell. The shell details are very good and virtually bang on the CPR version of the 10. The new thin hand rails only required a black coat on the top rail and safety white as they were molded in Action Red. The long nose forward lineage of the unit is recognized by the correct placement of the bell and the short end Multi mark.

The units runs well; like an Atlas would be expected to and the shell takes weathering very well....one would expect that a Montreal Locomotive Works licenced Alco product would be dirty now wouldn't one....?









I also bought one of the CNR classic green and gold RS 18's that I've used for a smaller passenger - it to runs well and looks very nice.



True Line did a good job on these with one notible issue - the fuel tank is wrong - the tank should be recessed under the frame, not flush with it but the design of the Atlas frame doesn't allow that - a few hoirs of trying to see if it could be modified hasn't garnered any ideas yet.....

I have a few more to "put make up and eye shadow" on and look forward to a nice; dirty; sooty; grimy; MLW consist in the near future.

These are really sharp!

My only suggestion would be further darkening the radiator fan to give it some depth. Otherwise, really stellar!

I remember summers spent chasing trains in Ontario, New Brunswick, St. John, Nova Scotia, and Cape Breton; and boy do these jump out at me. Thanks, now i've got something else to buy.

Some of us are enjoying our unemployment just a little too much...  Good thing you have that stockpile of projects to fill the time between checks! ;D

I like these. I had thought of picking up a CP multi mark to have as foreign power coming in on my CP trains from the VT gateway.

I've got four (2 CN RS18, 2 CP RS10) and am I the only one wondering a) why only one road number per scheme was produced and b) why the heck did they not do the RS18 in CP's multimark. Outside of that, one of the most important locomotive releases for us Canuks in the diesel era... especially in the east or BC. And they run like a dream (thanks Atlas).

Very nice units, Pud.  The fuel tank is a real bothersome thing.  When I built my RS-10s from the old Atlas/Kato RS-11, I milled the frame and installed the Kaslo Shops fuel tank, and I am wondering if that can be done with the newer mechanism under the TLT units:




I would also like to know if I could get the larger fuel tank from the Atlas RSD-12 onto the new RS-11 mechanism.  That would make possible a later RS-18.

Tim,

I really could use that fuel tank for my NP units.  I've cut down the frames and started to rebuild the tanks but this could save me some time and effort (worth whatever they cost I'm sure).  I checked Kaslo but it seems they are rebuilding their website.  I also checked with Central Hobbies and they didn't have them listed.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

I don't think that "I" could mill the frame well enough to get the Kaslo tank on - and as Andrew said; Kaslo parts are getting hard to get - the BCR bulk head flat is out of stock everywhere including Central and the gentlemen has no idea if they'd get more.....

I'd love to try and make the Kaslo tank fit; it would make the RS 10/18 by TLT damn near perfect.

I haven't seen the fuel tanks in a while but the bulkhead flats were there quite recently - I will look into this for you both.

So far it's the same in HO. RS10 in Action Red, but not the RS18. And you're not the only one wondering why.
