What's Your Favorite "Wash" and Your Favorite Way to Apply it???

Most folks say to start "weathering" with a good "wash" of some sort. Seems like there are numerous recipies for "black" washes, and several ways to apply it.

What's your favorite mixture and application methods for rolling stock and locos??

I use El Cheapo craft acrylics thinned with dirty water.  Multiple thin washes seem to work best.

doesn't tap water tend to puddle?

I do pretty much the same, but use windshield washer fluid + India Ink.

(I usually use black, gray and various browns)

I mix em up with just a few drops of paint in maybe .25oz of booze, then paint it on and work it around.

I have a few:
70% alcohol or windex+ cheapo acrylic paints
I have a black, grey, and a white. Gonna dump the white one out and get some brown. I used the black
one for the SD45, U33C, and U30C that I put pictures up of in the HO scale area.
Cheapo Water color + distilled water
only have black at the moment
Vincent

If N scale had good SD40-2s, C30-7s, U30Cs, SD45s, SD40s, and SW10s; I'd be in N scale.

I use acrylic craft paints thinned with windshield washer fluid.  I give everything a coat of Dullcote first.

The thing I've wondered about, and have tried both.. is when you apply the wash do you have your car upright?  Or, do you do one side at a time?  lay it down, apply, let dry, then on to the next side?

when the car is upright, it tends to pool in a more natural way towards the bottom.. but if you want that overall color it seems laying it down is best..

Just one of the little details I never see mentioned in any of the articles concerning washes..

I lay the car on its side, put a puddle of the wash between the ribs, then use a dry brush to draw the excess toward the bottom of the car.  It gives the effect of water and grime washing down the vertical surface.

I have several
1) a bottle with black acrylic (a few drops) mixed with water
2) a bottle with india ink mixed (a few drops) with alcohol
3) a bottle of AIM black wash

It depends on how I want the black to show
1) gives a light black shadow
2) gives a darker (more pronounced) black shadow
3) gives a grimy black (dirty) look
