So some recent threads have got me thinking about the design philosophy behind my "kidney" layout.

To sort of add to what you wrote, I have a tendency to freeze up at the idea that I'll spend a lot of time working on something like hand laying track, only to screw up the scene later to the point I'd have to replace the track.  So I never seem to get out of the research phase (until now hopefully).

I've got an article I'm working on, too, based on a couple of posts I made about operations.  Still fooling with it.  It's actually the opposite of what you wrote about.  I have the tendency to build first, ask questions later!

Ed - I built an HO layout in 1997 using the "dominoes" and I hated them. Lining them
up sucked - I ended up bolting them together and leaving them as a permanent layout.
The real problem I had was using the "pockets" for the legs. Ending up bolting the
legs to the frame.

That's a lot of the same philosophy that went into my door layout as well.  Notice that the new yard extension doesn't require major changes to the old layout, so the original door can stand on its own.  A domino can't exactly do that.

I would take a door over a domino any day. I never did like the domino's.

It's not really done. I was going to finish working on the yard, but decided that I'm just holding off since it's probably going to go all EOL with a house purchase soon.

make sure you start a layout 5 minutes after you move in or it will take you 5+ years to do it...

This new house you speak of, is Klein's on the way from my house?  This is a very important factor in whether or not your mortgage gets approved.  (Or if mine gets paid!)

Realizing that this layout would be simple, and shouldn't be designed to fit into some grand future plan, allowed me to keep it simple. I

I followed the same idea with my current little layout. It is liberating not to try to do too much with too little. The purpose of my current layout is to learn.. not making it a small part of a larger whole allowed me to worry less about the final quality of my result and try different things.

Well, the current front runner is off of Putty Hill over in Loch Raven Village, but it's still only 15 minutes instead of 5. But is kinda on the way.
