Conrail did this same thing too:

Conrail did a better job as it's hard to tell the addition from the original car. That green stone container car really looks like a bad kitbash. It would make a good project for an enterprising modern modeler.

A lot of roads have converted boxcars like this... NS, CSX, BNSF etc.  Don't know if I'd call it prototype kitbashing though... more like prototype scrathbuilding.

I like that they didn't even bother changing the doors.

It's like the MTL boxcar pipe load turned 90deg.

Why wouldn't you call it scratchbuilding? They're staring with an existing car. Scratchbuilding would be building the whole thing from sheet steel and angles (which enough rr shops have completely built their own cars as well, from scratch).

I wouldn't call it kitbashing as multiple cars aren't cut up to make one.  The extensions are built from sheet and angles, ergo, it is 'scratchbuilt'
