Daryl,,, I worked as a yardman/conductor out of proviso in 93/94.
We took trains to:
Schiller Park WC
Barr Yard CSX
Landers NS
Clearing Yard BRC
Markham yard ICG,, i think it was markham,, it was down by the lake,,,, we had to use the what they called the St. Charles Air line.
33rd street yard Conrail
Also in Blue Island there is a small 4 track GT yard, that we used to take coals trains to. Usaully empty. The one time I went we used a 44-9W,, and had to run long hood forward all the way back to proviso.
We used to take cofc/tofc cars/loads to global one from global two. Power was what ever was available.
The BRC and the CNW used to take turns running the transfers,, every two weeks they would switch.. The BRC would use anything from thier Bi-centenial sw-1500 all the way to the C-425's. That was way kewl to see come off the IHB on the east end of proviso.
Email me if you need any more info me.. I can give you train designations... fer example,,YPR 07 was the job that worked the industries on the north end.. Like Baby Ruth, Stone container, US Tobacco. 07 also serves the indutries right around the yard. Sun printing,, enteman's bakery, The bottling company that made seven up and the other drinks.
Yard 9 was the recieving yard,, yard 5 was the hump yard, Yard 2 was the departureyard. One thing you might want,, I know we used railroad ties painted day glo orange so we knew where the cars would remain in the clear in the hump on the east end. Because there was a trimmer job that would shove the hump track to the clear spot so they could hump more cars,, The job was called sputnik,, cause it was a satilite job,, so they said. Certain tracks where just for certain trains.
Like I said if you need more info just drop me a note,,adios wyatt
