Hey now, I thought NS didn't take over Conrail until 1998! I'm thinking about 1990 as the main date, but am actually considering 1999 just so I CAN run some Conrail power, sacrilegious as it is. Hmm, I've already got ticked off Lee with my Chessie stuff. Not sure if I can take on the Conrail legions...

If you wanted to do 99 you'd have to model a bunch of trains just sitting there, with figures walking the train comparing it to paperwork for the 5th time.

You could always just get some NS units to run around there, they WOULD look right at home.

But beware, black engines just don't photograph well.

Which was pretty sad given all the 'preparation' they did prior to black arm band day. Seems to me that they accomplished alot of patching ensuring my visit to the West Slope in late May '99 would have more bastardized lash-ups that it should have  >

Seriously, envirodude, the C&O keeps calling me back, too.  That exactly why I plan to someday model Doswell, Virginia, so I can get a couple of my favorite roads on the layout plausibly: the RF&P and the C&O.

I couldn't tell you if it was the right one if it ran me over.  Basic features I can tell, but beyond that I'm lost.... :'(  I'm getting better though.  I've learned quite a bit from you guys over the last few years.

The grain on many of the framing timbers runs cross ways as if it was produced pre-cut in a kit stamping , is that the case ?

I'm sure over the years we've all dabbled in other modeling subjects, 30's aircraft was one of my passions years ago.  Got tired of all that rigging.  But I still surf all the different modeling sites like Modelwarships, Armorama, Steel Navy, Hyperscale, and others to see what's up.  Anyone who's been around awhile have probably heard of the self labeled "Verlinden Techniques", where theatrical arts painting was used to over weather armor and aircraft models.  Like anything, some of it was well executed and a lot of it "overcooked".  Nice thing about model trains, as Tom and others have shown us, sometimes too much is still not enough!   Anyway, the rave right now is "Post Shading" where details are pre painted using a dark color and over-painted with thin coats of the final color so that you get areas of highlight. Nice technique that's pretty easy to pull off and so far seems to afford a nice base to start more agressive weathering.  I put aside my West Coast Bias when I came across a photo of an ex PC or NYC boxcar overpainted a number of times and ending up with CR markings in block out areas.  I'll post a shot of the proto later.

I used a 50' Smooth side and while not the exact prototype, worked for this exercise.  A coat of grey primer and then using thinned down dark grey, traced the panel lines and all the undercuts and depressions.  You can go very dark with this step so a couple of passes works well to control the lines.  Then I took some PC Green and cut it with 40% white, thinned everything by 50% and slowly painted over the car. Block outs were taped off and colors matching the photo were used.  Next step is to draw  up the decals and finish it off.  But I though I'd share the progress.  A quick trip on Google will show hundreds of examples of this process...well worth the time.
