But I don't get slamming an "annoucement".... it's not "real" yet; there's nothing to judge, review or gauge it against.

It's no diferent that you praising Atlas' 42' coil car over on the A-board.  You've never seen the car.  It's not 'real'.  But that didn't stop you from having an opinion the offering.

Actually the image in the release looks really good. Almost prototypical 

I'd say you've got Pud, but Atlas has a pretty unassailable reputation for their freightcars (and darn near unassailable for locomotives). Praising an unreleased Atlas freightcar is not on par with pooping on IM for an unreleased locomotive. I've no experience with the IM F-units until the VIA FP9's are released, but I do have three tunnel motors, they aren't the best, but not the worst.

I'm looking forward to the IM SD40-2W's because it's on my wish list. I've said before (maybe not here) that if IM hadn't announced these they'd never get done RTR in N. There is now no chance of anyone ever doing these in N now that one Mfg has announced them... EVER. So, I take what I can get...

No Jason; it is different; I praised the announcement of a product; the will to bring it to the market and the idea that another car was being offered.... I didn't pass judgement on the product because I haven't seen it......so; you think that's the same as dumping on an announcement eh ? Um.... don't think so.

The "offering".... meaning the concept, the possibility that a new car is being brought out, and thanking the company for making the effort. There was no judgement on the car's quality, value, place in the market..... 'cause it ain't built yet....... and that is the same as beating the snot out of an announcement..... ? No, I don't think so.

I treat model railraoding as an "art form".... it appears that some others treat negativity; cynical commentary and verbal attacks as an  "art form" too.....maybe they should try model railroading; It's far more fufilling.

Very true, and now take a company that uses the "worst stuff" for trucks, and that gets folks commenting the way they do about this new announcement.

Locos are different than cars. These are "big ticket" items, and once we get past the "rivet counting" and all other shell/paint details, a company's reputation rests on their mechanism. At least it does for "runners".

Do you really think that Kato could have the reputation they do for the "best" running mechanisms, if they would have taken IM's approach to building locos???

I would like to see another source too, for a good -2 on the market. But, expectations are mixed...........as this thread shows, based on IM's reputation.

They're showing a shell.............on the SOS mechanism. Pretty paint can't cover that up.

Bottom line IMO, is that IM is going to have to change their "business model" and philosophy on manufacturing locos, to get to where folks say "it runs just as good or better than a Kato"

Afer all, it's IM's advertising that's touting how "good" they are, and it's "us modelers" saying "we hope so, but..............."

I'm sorry I got confused, I thought you had made proper announcement protocol really clear:

We should reward an annoucement of a new model with no more than, and no less than "If it's good, I'll buy, if it's not I won't"....

.......so it wasn't rewarded by me - it's not my era thus they won't get the reward, my dollars; What they did get was an "attaboy" for effort of trying something new....... as opposed to IM who was slagged for daring to try.... maybe you're right and I'm wrong - maybe we should all take up a comfy armchair; fire darts at everything; have no positive encouragement; no "attaboys" for trying; not wait the time required for a model to hit the ground, but avoid the rush and pass judgement on it right away... yep; that's the ticket; I'll get right on that.....How could I have been so silly ?

"If it's good I'll buy it, if it's not I won't"..... maybe you'd have it changed to " If I can slag it I will; if I can't, I will anyway"....

Tell you what - maybe you do your thing and I'll do mine - and let's hope the mfg read neither. Enough negativity from me; I'm not a pro at it.
