The armatures were culled from a butterfly bush in the back yard.  The flowers look like this...


I break them up into smaller segments, then spray them with clear spray paint, spray adhesive, or whatever other sticky stuff in a spray can I have, then roll them in some ground foam.  Using the $.96 spray bombs from Walmart, I can do about 50 trees for a dollar, plus a little extra for the ground foam.

I actually drop the sprayed armature into the bottle of ground foam and shake it around, so nothing gets wasted.  (except me on paint fumes...)

    Yes, very nice work Lee. Out in my area we try to go on a Sagebrush collecting trip once a year, the dried branches used for tree armatures. Sure wish I could walk out my door and just harvest tree material. Nate Goodman (Nato).

The butterfly bush flowers are ideal for doing a front edge of a forest since they're tall and slender.  You can pack a lot of trunks together to get some density.  Sometimes the lower, wider part makes a good stand-alone tree.  For bigger individual trees, I like stacking a couple of pieces of sedum.

I should have dusted the river first though...   I'll have to re-coat the gloss and try that one again.  In fact, I might do one of each engine I have at that location!
