Well so far this has been productive.  I get the Brown 89' TOFC..and the 90 Ton 3 Bays...I'll present them at the Car Selection Meeting this morning...thanks for the great ideas!

Yeah, what he said!  Another option is the 89-footer with Z-channel sides.  I'm not 100% sure your current body syle was around when TT "brown" was "in," but I'm sure someone here knows.

Here is the reference shot for our Conrail Caboose.  Interesting discussion laced with usual shots across the bow ) , but informative as well.  The problem we face is in choosing a prototype to model and doing one that allows us some freedom to provide plenty of paint schemes.  But, I think it's out of line to accuse me of not doing my job just because of the choice I made.

We do our best to contact historical societies and I haunt a large number of Yahoo groups.  Plenty of times, questions go un-answered or I get "you can't do that car in our scheme"... I fully appreciate the situation, make the effort, but a lot of times I have to fall back on available references.  [snip]  It's impossible to be all things to everyone, but with constructive exchanges and some of the offerings of additonal information from folks who want to help, we can be better with each new car.

Apparently a number of the N&W schemes MTL/Kadee has done in the past were poorly researched, and then the same errors are repeated on re-runs 10 (or 20) years later. So I guess some of the "grandfathered" MT schemes should be reviewed ...

I should put it on my "to do" list to send MT some of the glowing errors on past releases (like using black on a blue boxcar!). I tend to be hopper centric and I am expecting the next N&W coal hopper to NOT having NEON errors.

You haven't been around long enough to really watch me and Skibbe go at it... wait till something worse like turbocharged cars comes up...

I think only Skibbe participated in this particular thread and on another forum to boot, but how many remember the infamous F units with the cast/welded nose thread?  I have forgotten now who it was that started that?

That nose thread was Spikre over on Atlas.  I went so far as to look at the original EMD drawings and touched base with the author of the RPC article in question in order to prove Spikre wrong and he still didn't believe me.  I don't try that hard anymore, but I really do try to argue with facts.

Back to the topic. Now that manufacturer's have started adding some proto-specific details on on cars, dos this mean the tooling is actually getting easier or cheaper. OR have sales increased in the hobby to the point where they can cover the cost at a price low enought to help sales?

Joe, Most of the time tooling is expensive because you have to get someone else to do it. Is all the tooling for MTL cut by MTL employees? If so then it wouldn't be so expensive (you are paying the guy anyways, right) Just curious.

I've yet to conteplate how someone could insist an E/F nose was a solid casting...

Right,  All of it minus the Z track is cut here in Talent.  Not that it's expensive, just a matter of capacity.  We have 6 tool makers working on 4-7 new body styles a year, plus all the support and repair in plastics (injection mold set up and the like)  We have a fixed expense which is the cost of payroll and materials.   The problem is getting more work done when you are already working to capacity...same everywhere I suspect.

As for the roof and the bays...more than just new holes.   Depending what style gives us the best range, a new pattern would be appropriate.  If I were to need new openings, I could do it with an arbor press or one of the CNC Mills.  We have some body styles that require secondary machining to remove details for specific roads.
