Love your grills. I haven't found anything (yet) that looks "right" on ATSF silver grills. Dark grey or black, no way. Darkened silvers look better, but I still haven't found the right color mix. ... Any suggestions, I'll listen (and try on some junk engines shells at the store).

Actually, that's a VERY unenviable position to be in. I think the issue is that your dark gray just might not be DARK enough. I'd try starting with black and adding some gray, then try, then another drop, etc... until you can get it to where it "looks" black, but isn't. Good luck... and let me know how it works out, because I have some PC stuff queued up. That engine looks great.  Now that you have finished it, one of the major manufacturers (not Kato) should announce they are going to produce SD40-2's with road specific details (Conrail with Flex coil trucks and cab signal boxes)!  This one PRR HO guy told me that he gave up on scratch building since each time he finished something, a manufacturer came out with it a short time later.  I call it the "Dave Boss rule".  I can only hope your efforts produce the same results!

Make it your own damn self! I've seen your handiwork... it'll probably knock mine out of the water... I plan on writing up what I did for the CRHS site, so keep your eyes peeled. It wasn't much work, I just work at a glacial pace.

What I found interesting though was a video of one of these in 1979, when they were still almost brand new. It was BLACK! Absolutely filthy! I couldn't believe it. I can't imagine what they had to have done to it in such a short time to make it so SP-worthy.

The color separation around the grilles is a little rough, but that will be less noticeable once it's weathered.  Any chance you can hit the highlights on the grilles with a dry brush of blue?  To me that adds some dimension and depth.

That'a a great job you did there.  I did notice some blue showing on the white handrails at places.  I went and looked at some prototype photos and noticed the white showing on some, so no big deal.

I was planning on it!

I had thought about drybrushing the grills with blue, but take a GOOD look at those photos you posted. The grills really ARE black (err, at least gray). I'm tempted to try brushing them with some grimy black, actually. That's not an across the board thing either though.

I do see little specs where the black is in a area that should be blue and vice versa. I may get out the 00 brush and tackle that.

It would probably be better to hit the radiator grill with a lighter grey, then let a wash of grimy black settle into the recesses.  I can see where the fins are more grey than blue.  It might be a case where a blue caste with a wash to darken the inner surfaces would look more right than following the proto.
