They must jerk the car real hard to the side with a cable? ;D

So, why is this better? Loading times must be 5x that of a tri-level?

Looks like maybe twice the density. I'm sure some bean-counter was responsible for this idea.

I don't know.  It looks pretty easy to just drive the cars onto the ramps until the wheels fall into the holes and raise three panels at a time with a forklift.  I would bet a car could be loaded and sealed in 20-30 minutes.

Wasn't there some talk of draining fluids and such? That can't be a speedy process. Plus I'm sure they have to get locked into the panel somehow.

There was eventually a Vert-a-Pak option on the Vega that eliminated the need to drain the fluids.

I think they only learned this through warranty claims for faulty transmissions and rear ends.

Re: Vertapak cars, there were slots in the front and rear bumpers of the Vegas through which devices part of the car side were inserted to "tie-down" the auto for transport. And, yes, the idea was density. Railroads charged a per rail car tariff to move autos, so if you moved twice as many, the cost per vehicle was half as much. The fallacy here was that the Vertapak car cost a helluva lot more to build than a trilevel. Plus the auto had to be designed specifically for it.

You have an actual cost comparison between an ACF Low-Dek with a Vert-a-Pak vs an ACF Low-Dek with a Paragon, W&K, Thrall etc tri-level?

The Vega had some baffle in the oil pan and a special carburetor float to keep them from leaking.

Edit:
The Vega VK5 (vert-a-pack) option:
Quote
a baffle in the oil pan to prevent flooding the forward cylinders with oil. - off-center filler caps on the battery. - a plug in the fuel-tank vent line. - an overflow hose from the float bowl to the charcoal canister. - tilting the windshield-washer bottle 45 degrees. - plastic spacers between the splash pans and the engine to reinforce the motor mounts.

I also read there were 4 fasteners that locked the frame into the railcar.

Got my order, already sent my woodchip car back because it was missing parts and had broken stirrup steps.

Has anybody posted a review of their N Scale stuff yet?

I was looking at their Trinity Hoppers and they do not look anywhere near as good as the Intermountain ones!
