So when were these announced? I new that someone was going to be doing these in N because a little birdie told me, but I can't recall an announcement... unless this WAS the announcement.

They're probably gonna quit announcing anything until the container is on the water, since every time they do people get out their stopwatches and start the timer.

Anyway, interesting announcement.  Not a purchase for me, but I'd sure love to see them in action at shows and such...very neat locomotives.  I've seen a few of them here in Texas on occassion, and they're a nice change of pace and my love for SD40-2's puts them high on my list of foreign power.  I'd say this was a good indication that we'll see standard SD40-2's also, but I know better than to assume something that makes sense will reveal itself in the model railroading world.

And, to complete my triple-negative backflip, I'll say that I just hope Intermountain is learning from their mistakes.  The potential for them to make an excellent locomotive is there, but they keep getting "so close, yet so far away".

Having said all that, they're probably the only chance I'll ever have of getting some MKT SD40-2's, so I'm at least a little pumped about it.

I still hope that someday Atlas buys out IM. So if that were ever to come to pass, this would be good news.

Otherwise? I don't think so, because it means that a reliable company isn't going to be doing them any time soon.

Good because I can see these going on some Kato SD40-2 frames that I bought for the SD40-2W's I was going to build. Guess not anymore.

If these locos have "scale width" hoods like (post-Kato) Atlas hood units do then you may have a problem fitting them over the "fat" Kato SD40-2 chassis.

I'll grind the chassis if I have to... or just use the IMRC if they're ok. I've three TM's and they are not the best models I've seen and those Atlas trucks are the infamous floaters. Kato/Atlas/LL blow IMRC away in terms of engieering and build quality from my experience. Still, a RTR SD40-2W fills a gap in my fleet that is most appreciated... they can become fodder for bashing. CN had these in at least four distinct variants (with and without DB and with and without corrugated rad intakes), so there will be some room for modeling. I bet Robbman can elaborate on many more variants. I'll be in for four or five.

One thing. The pictures make is seem like they've used white for the striping. CN does not use white on locomotives for the stripes or the noodle, rather these items are gray and it shows when a correct model is placed beside an incorrect one. I hope IM gets this right. Atlas used white on the recent GP38-2's, while LL/Hobbycraft used gray on their GP9RM models. Boy does it show on those GP38-2's!

Now if only Atlas would do the GP40-2L...

My flash might not be doing the stripes a favour, but I suspect they were white rather than a pale grey. The IM guy did confirm they would be doing DB and non DB, not sure about the rads though.

That's going to be a tight fit on the back truck.  The geartower on the SD50/60 trucks is "centered" over the middle "hopper", I mean axle.

This should make for a very interesting frame arrangement. Very "fragile" I would think.

Kato took the easy way out on their first SD40-2's, and just designed and built new trucks............that were are good as all the rest of the Kato line-up.

"Coming out of the shoot" with those trucks on a newly designed engine, is a real STUMBLE IMO.

Well look at the SD45-2's fuel tanks, except for the Conrails, mine have been replaced.
