Weekend Update - 3/29/2009

Painted up some cars in the last two weeks and also got the papermill panel wired up and installed.
These pulpracks were given to me by good buddy Central Vermont, need to get some decals for them.

Two more chipcars.

Two new Athearn PS-1's.

And a double door I started last year.

Papermill panel, about 40 hours worth of work on this one the hardest one let.

I whipped up a little spray booth out in the garage.


I need to get a bub for the light fixture.

Also got a couple of more decoders installed for the model railroading public...

Life Like E-6's with lead blobs and plastic frames, and...


Atlas SD-7/9, with a couple of drop ins.

Over the weekend I was able to get the 1st layer of the roadbed completed as well as the second layer of the outter loop.

I was able to finish soldering new SMD LED's to get all the lights on my Aero-train to operate.... only to find out that I had wired them backwards. >  So one more night to get that right only to find out that there was way too much light leakage among the three light pipes in the cab.  So I got out the silver marker to isolate the pipes, only to see that the lights are too dim.  Oh well, I moving onto the drawbars for the rest of the train and come back to the lights later.


I hit my first Co. Springs swapmeet and was impressed by the number of tables/vendors.  But I didn;t see anyone buying anything and all the dealers were ready to give away the farm.

I was able to score one good deal.



Of course no good deed goes unpunished.  I soon found out that I probably need to replace the NP herald with the larger 60" version and add a "Main street of the Northwest" slogan.

Once again, knowledge gets in the way.

I spent all day Saturday at the train club running trains for a layout tour. Quite a number of people came through, and the layout ran fairly well for the first real operation of it after being shut down for construction for the last year.

In terms of any other actual model building, it's again another

I actually got some modeling done this week that wasn't 1:1.  I got 3/4 of the drywall hung and tapped in the basement and started working on an 8' section that will be the helper base. The section is based off of Bartlett, NH on the MEC Mountain Div.

I'm working on it in the kitchen right now as I still dont have the heaters installed in the basement and its still a bit chilly up here. Although it is a very nice and warm 37 out today!

Here we have the basics of the helper base that I have yet to name. The track plan is from the 1970 MEC Bartlett track chart. This part of the layout is at almost the max height of the main line run, so about 60-62" off the floor to top of the rail. We can see here that there is a former MEC GP38 helper on the freight house track. CR is assigning 8 of the former MEC units in helper service on the 50 mile 2.29% grade.

thats not Smith & Son ballast is it?  out of Ohio?

i thought so... i am using it right now... same stuff...  penn ohio... 1 bag has gotten me about 6 feet of 5 track main line....   Mr. Smith will be getting another order this weekend....
