I want ask some of you Conrailers/NS'ers about the sd40/sd40-2 which NS added to there roster. I have 3 NS sd40-2 early production yet I'm looking at the sd40-2 kato bodyshell 921440 and that totally different from the early production without the 2 fans above the middle section of the bodyshell. I know that bodyshell is suppose to be non dynamic brakes which is alright. Now what about Conrail?

Pretty sure Conrail didn't have any SD40-2's without dynamic brakes. That shell is a no go for former CR units.

CR's SD40-2's all had dynamic brakes. So did NS's, and in fact, NS had several variations of SD40-2's. I don't think any of the Kato shells are EXACT matches, but the Early and Mid-Production are probably pretty close to most of the former NS/NW units. The CR units match the Mid-Production more closely, but had flexicoil trucks.

Thanks Lou I was thinking of creating a few more sd40-2 in NS paint scheme but just don't know which bodyshell will be close to the NS/Conrail sd40-2 and if anyone of you can help me find the kato locomotive to match NS/Conrail.

The NS SD40-2s that Kato did are based on ex-N&W SD40-2s. They are reasonably close (close enough for Kato!).

Major goofs are that the trucks do not have triple clasp brakes and there is no bell on the top of the long hood.

They also have extended-range dynamics...

Kato compromised so that the shell is passable for all the roadnames they did, so it's not exactly like any road they made them in. In HO, you can buy Cannon parts to "correct" things, but it hasn't (won't?) happen in N-scale. You get as close as you can, and go with what's available. If you're really skillful, you can improve what Kato did. I'm not that good, and some details I could use aren't available.
