You should just backdate this sucker to the mid-'40s so you could include some of the RF&Ps regal looking 2-8-4s and 4-8-4s.  They should be bashable from a Walthers 2-8-4, keeping the same body and changing details (like Chris did with his Erie Berk) and a Kato GS-4 4-8-4 with scratch built body and new tender.  Don't ask me why I've put thought into this though . . .

The 2-8-4 from the Wally yes, but the drivers on the 4-8-4 make that a tough proposition.

Doesn't the Bachmann 4-8-4 Northern have box pock drivers?  The new mechanism isn't supposed to be too bad from what I've read...  Although the drivers are a tad big, I'm eyeballing that with the idea that a Potomac might find its way onto the project list.

The problem is that the RF&P's 4-8-4's did not have BoxPok drivers, but had Baldwin Disc drivers. They are noticeably different. Some of Santa Fe's 4-8-4's had the same drivers. The last batch, the "Statesmen", like the John Marshall, shown, were the best looking 4-8-4's ever built, IMHO. There were three batches, the "Governors", the "Generals", and the "Statesmen". The "Generals" were all Confederate generals - can you imagine the stink that would be raised in a railroad did that today??  Hell, "The Capital Cities Route" logo would probably draw protests!

Those are some beautiful steamers, but I admit that I haven't had much luck with N scale steam.  However, those nice-looking Intermountain F-units in RF&P paint are reeeeeeeally tempting, so perhaps backdating to the mid-'50s . . .

For the record, since this thread is titled Snow Day, the weather here in wintry Longmont, CO today was 71 degrees and dry under partly cloudy skies.  Unfortunately we have had only 15% of our normal moisture this winter, so some snow here would be great.

Gregg,  I was thinking the Kato GS-4 was a good, but not ideal, stand in since the mech runs well, the pony and trailing trucks are similar and the driver size is similar to the RF&P 4-8-4s.  The wheels aren't the best match but they're better than spoked I guess.  I wonder how one would actually scratchbuild a drive wheel in N scale . . .  I agree with your opinion that the 613 to 622 Statesmen batch of 4-8-4s were the best looking out there.  I also agree that if you had a series of locomotives these days named after Confederate generals, everyone would have a hissy fit.  It must have been quite a sight to see 4-8-4 General J.E.B. Stewart storming northbound closing in on Washington!

Thanks for sharing the picture, Bob!  That looks like Alexandria to me.  I'm so jealous of all of the railfanning that you did in the 1970s, and I am glad that you documented much of it.

You just gotta love seeing F-units operating into the '70s.  The RF&P took such good care of its locomotives that many of its hood units (like the GP40 in the lead in this picture) would soldier on for years after CSX took over in 1992.  Where else would you see a GP35 on the point of a hot intermodal in the early 1990s?!
