Before & After

On the left, M-T boxcar with stock M-T Bettendorf-style trucks. On the right, same boxcar with AZL Bettendorf trucks (with 33-inch replacement wheelsets from AZL roller bearing trucks), and bolsters filed down .030 inches (6.6 scale inches).

Compare to 1:1

No couplers for the modified car yet, but I'm working on it...

I think it's a little too low.  Note that the journal box is lower than the sill.  Other than that, the AZL is closer to the size of the prototype.

Hmmm... guess I should have followed my gut, when I thought I should stop at .020.

As for the size of the AZL, it's right on the money.

But it's all moot anyway. AZL wheels won't run on my layout. Their flanges are too deep.

I don't suppose the MT wheels fit in the AZL trucks?

Hi David, Tom

The AZL one looks oversized to me . . . but the MT looks slightly under but perhaps better if the bolster was reduced slightly.

I agree with Tom that it does look a little low too.   Looking forward to your comparison rather than just going on the online pics though.

Cheers

Ben

Nope.

What a shame.

A little low, yes, but I'm impressed with how much better it looks with the AZL correct wheelbase truck underneath.  Are we thinking the MTL midget trucks are simply to clear the stir-ups?

That's my guess, FWIW. And all of their trucks are the same shorty wheelbase, too, even the 100-ton roller bearing.

And since the M-T stirrups are a bit too far inboard anyway, it ought to be fixable. I'm thinking maybe a set of etched brass replacements or something like that.

that's fixable - just need a lathe  ;D

Yep. And if I had one, I'd've fixed 'em already.

Do the metal wheels have a plastic bushing at each end or just one?

Good question on the plastic bushing . . . wonder if you can play around with the gauge?
