Island Model Works MBTA

I was wondering what people thought of Island Model Works cars. They are floating the idea of building MBTA bi-level commuter cars and I am thinking of pre-ordering some. How are their N-scale products?

Their products are pretty decent, I have only heard of a few complaints which was some of the shells was a little warped.  But overall they are okay.

Ok, so I REALLY want to speak well of them, and I REALLY want to see them succeed, but I've got to say, I'm kinda disappointed.

I got a pair of their SW1001 shells a while back, and I had really high hopes. See, the 1001 was THE engine for me growing up. They used to run right up the end of my street, and I saw them almost every day.

And I saw how well Richie (UP 1950s) did with his and I was stoked. But then reality started to set in. They made NO, and I mean NO provision to power these things. They're cast as a single piece (cab, hood and walkways), with super thick resin, making powering them almost impossible.

On top of that, the casting is as crisp as I'd really had hoped to see.

But what I really saw was just a real lack of forethought on the SW1001s, and I'm personally, really disappointed.

Hopefully their cars are better, but I'd be concerned when it comes to things like truck mountings, etc...

I still have my Comet II cars. Not real happy with them. The sides are evry thick resin and there are imperfections in the shell. It is resin so I should only expect so much... but my very first attempt at resin casting produced better results (the C30-7A project covered by N-Scale a few months ago).

Would I get some? Yep.... but they are on they WAY out list... just too much work and I have other stuff to do!

Hey Bill, welcome back.

Thanks Bob, its good to be back in the hobby and amongst friends.  Now its time to build that damn layout, even if it has to be modular. :
