One time in my life I wished I had ordered more NS. They were my favorite of the group. Sadly, these were so late in arriving most distributors were sold out before they even got here. From what I understand Atlas is sold out of everything now.

I guess that proves that these were highly anticipated and surely will lead to further runs, probably sooner than later.

Does anyone know which decoder fits in these?  Either NCE or Digitrax is fine with me, just don't know which version.

P.S. FYI, Kleins still shows about 14 or more still in stock of the NS for each number.  http://www.modeltrainstuff.com/N_Scale_Dash_8_s_s/1696.htm

Not so much for the Conrail versions as they seem to be a quick seller.

Chuck, that's the "beauty and the beast" of the pre-order system, especially when it hits the streets late.

I'm not complaining though, because I like the way Atlas has their pre-ordering system set up. It allows me to easily "plan" on what I want, save up the money, and not get "blindsided" because of a multiple release that was unannounced.

All of the previous Atlas NS locos had great paint, and nice detailing IMO. The 8-40's, B23's, and GP38's look outstanding in the black and white, and are becoming some of my favorites.

Remember, my primary road is DRGW, but the NS is running stronger every day.

John, So how do they run? Are you happy with them?

I'm guessing you didn't get the decoder equipped version, so have you installed a decoder?

Mine will probably be here on Monday. :(/ ;D

I haven't run them yet .. I need to order the decoders, since I am all DCC, I don't like 00 mode ..

I like the look of the new cut levers.  A little extra paint will make them really stick out.

Someone on another forum mentioned the circuit board looked the same as the Dash 8-40B's.  Can you confirm since you have one already?

I have absolutely no use for these locomotives, since my modeling era is 1983-86.  But the C40-8s look really nice and will be great to mix with the forthcoming CW40-8s.  Although I railfanned the RF&P in 1988-92, when these locomotives were the latest thing in motive power on CSX at that time and the yn2 scheme was still relatively new and refreshing (for CSX at that time, anyway), I really wanted to model pre-CSX.  Grrrrrrr!  That said, these locos bring back fond memories of my college years in Richmond, Virginia.  However, I can't afford to model so many different eras!  #$%#&!

We now return you to our regularly scheduled non-temper-tantrum-throwing programming.

John,

Is the frame coming from the factory painted black (for the most part)?  That will be great for those worm's eye pictures.  Curious that one frame half is painted completely but only the lower half on the other side.  Perhaps for identification in the factory during production?
