Another GN question

So; I'm confused (not an unfamiliar situation)........

Great Northern ran a small fleet of plug door 50' Express boxcars in the Empire Builder scheme with some of their named passenger trains... they were a REA style car - lower than a standard 50' car with passenger trucks and steam lines..... (MT makes a version)

I am working on a BSB scheme and found a picture of a 50' car in BSB... but it's not exactly the same.

It appears to be a "lower than normal" (see the height of the adjoing car) car but with a large standard door (10 ft ?) and passenger trucks similar to the older express 50's......I assume these were not the same cars with a new door......

Anyone know anything about these cars ? I want to include one in my BSB consist but will have to build one (I'm thinking about using the MT REA car, changing the door (custom built) and painting it but I want to learn more about this car first.......

Any help would be appreciated.

I think that looks like the MTL car. If I remember correctly it is a lot lower than "normal". The door is probably different style, but I wouldn't think that would deter you.

It's over a foot shorter on the inside from a regular box car.

So, for a "close enough is" version I could bash a MT express car (REA version or GN version), add an 8 ft door and call it "soup"....?

All logic and rational thought says just be content with the MT car..........but when did logic and rational thought ever get in the way of one of my "flyers".........? ;D

I think I can cut down a door to fit the lower car height ( might have to reduce width too... Chopper will be busy) and then sand down the plug door details. Will probably have to sand down the thickness of the "doner door" as well.

Interesting to see if i can rig up a way to have removable marker lights - I'd like to run the boxcar at the head end on one consist and the rear on another..... hmmmmmmmmmmm ???
