Dammit, Dave, your track looks just fine as it is. While you think that Code 55 would look nicer, it is going to be hard to blend new track into the existing scenery. Unless you are experiencing operating problems with the current track, leave it alone. PRR used heavy rail anyway, the team track at Woodberry, MD, where Life-Like loaded styrofoam chests, used 152 lb. rail!

If you're considering moving the oil tanks, how about moving them to this end of the building (where the shrubs next to the foundation are), perhaps in line with each other (and parallel to the end wall), rather than next to each other.  I see there is a slope there where the land drops off from the foundation, but it wouldn't be hard to place the tanks in there.  Also, this placement shouldn't block access of the trucks to the coal trestle and would free up that loading dock that faces the street.

Normally, I would say yes .. especially if he didn't have all the ballast down.. Maybe he could try a few of the sidings .. see how it works out ..

I'd leave the rail the way it is. In every pic I've ever seen of your layout, never once has the rail seemed noticeably over-sized. Save your desire for code 55 for a module or the layout you build once you settle.

So it sounds like most of you think I should leave the track as-is.

On the one hand, the track as it is operates nearly flawlessly and looks decent in person.  On the other hand, it looks toy-like in photos.

Part of me thinks if it ain't broke, don't fix it.  But then, I've been thinking about adding another crossover near the station...  do I invest in more code 80?  Argh.

Well, with so many new products competing for my hobby dollar and with little hobby time it almost seems foolish to tear out & replace track that works.

...and yet that very track will always hold back this layout visually...
